배우자의 국적에 따른 필리핀 결혼이주 여성들의 다양성

국문 초록

이 논문은 외국 남성과 결혼한 필리핀 여성들을 대상으로 필리핀 현지에서 수집한 자료를 활용하여 남성의 국적에 따라 부부의 특성에 차이가 있는지를 살펴보았다. 기술통계와 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과를 종합하면 첫째, 미국, 일본, 기타 국적의 남성들은 한국 남성에 비하여 나이가 많고 초혼인 비중이 낮다. 교육수준은 일본 남성이 가장 낮고, 영어 구사능력은 일본 및 한국 남성들이 가장 낮다. 둘째, 미국이나 기타 국적에 비하여 한국 및 일본 남성과 결혼하는 필리핀 여성들은 나이가 어리며 초혼 비중이 높다. 반면 교육수준과 영어구사능력은 일본 및 한국 남성과 결혼하는 여성이 상대적으로 낮다. 따라서 일본 및 한국 남성과 결혼하는 경우는 의사소통에 문제가 있을 것으로 생각된다. 셋째, 한국 남성과 결혼하는 여성들은 더 나은 삶을 꿈꾸거나 가족을 돕기 위해서 등 현실적인 이유로 결혼을 선택하는 경향이 높다. 남편에 대해서 잘 모르는 비중도 높아서 결혼생활 적응에 어려움을 겪을 것을 예상할 수 있다. 반면 필리핀 교포와 결혼하는 경우는 부부간 나이 차이가 적고 부부 모두 교육수준이 높으며 의사소통에 문제가 없어서 결혼생활 적응이 쉬울 것으로 예상된다. 넷째, 일본 남성들의 낮은 사회경제적 특성, 일본 및 한국 남성과 결혼하는 필리핀 여성들의 낮은 사회경제적 특성 및 의사소통의 어려움을 고려하면 국제결혼이 빈번한 필리핀에서 일본 및 한국은 국제결혼 선택지로 그다지 선호되는 국가가 아닐 수 있다. 이는 필리핀과 미국과의 역사적 연관성, 필리핀인들의 미국에 대한 선망과 무관하지 않다. 국제결혼에 대한 균형잡힌 이해를 돕기 위해서는 송출국의 관점에서 자료를 수집하고 분석하는 노력이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study examined whether socioeconomic characteristics of international-marriage couples are different by nationality of spouses by using survey data collected in Philippines. Based on descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression analysis, the finds are as follows. First, compared to men from America, Japan, and others, Korean men tend to be young and never-married. Educational attainment is lowest for Japanese men, while fluency in English is lowest both for Korean and Japanese. Second, compared to those who married to men from the US or others, Fillipinas married to Korean or Japanese men tend to young and never-married. Given that these women have lower level of educational attainment and English proficiency, those who married to Korean and Japanese seem to have difficulty in adjusting to marital life. Third, those got married to Korean men seem to choose marriage as a way of helping family or pursuing better life. They also tend not to know spouses well enough, which makes hard for marital life in the future. Those who married to second or third generation of Filippinos living in foreign countries tend to have little age gap between couples and not to have difficulties in communications. Finally, in the Philippines where international marriage has been prevalent and destination countries have been diverse, Japan or Korea do not seem to be the preferred countries based on difficulties in communications. It is also partly attributed to the admire for the US by people in Philippines. In order to have a balanced understanding of international marriage, more data should be collected in the country of origin of international marriage couples and perspectives of origin country should be respected.
