국문 초록

본 논문은 우리나라 노동시장에서의 선별(screening) 과정을 1차적 선별인 대학입시단계와 2차적 선별인 노동시장 진입단계로 구분한 뒤, 이러한 이중 선별구조에 입각하여 입시체제의 작동방식을 이론적으로 고찰한다. 대학입시단계에서의 인적자원 선별 강도가 상대적으로 강할수록, 개인이 소지한 내재적 특성보다는 출신대학의 집합적 평판이 노동시장에서 보다 중요한 신호(signal) 기능을 담당하게 된다. 이에 학생과 학부모가 한정된 자원을 교육투자에 배분할 때, 고등교육보다는 대학 진학 이전인 중등교육 단계에 투자를 집중할 유인이 형성된다. 따라서, 대학입시의 변별력 상승은 대학 간 평판의 격차를 확대하고 입시경쟁의사회적 수요를 증대시킬 소지가 크다. 또한, 지나친 대학 간 서열화는 고등교육 단계에서의 자기계발 동인(motive)의 하락을 초래할 수 있다. 이상의 분석결과는 노동시장의 1차적 선별과 2차적 선별의 상대적 강도에 따라, 국가 간 교육체제의 근본적 차이가 발생할 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study assumes that Korea’ labor market for college graduates is comprised of two stages of screening procedures; primary screening through college entrance and secondary screening through company recruitment, and then analyzes the workings of the college entrance system with a focus on the dual screening structure of the labor market. As the college entrance exerts stronger power as a primary screener, the collective reputation of college will be given stronger influence in the labor market as a proxy variable to individuals’ intrinsic values. As a result, students and parents tend to focus their education investment on secondary education (rather than higher education) which is considered as a preparation stage for the college entrance. Therefore, enhanced differentiating role played by the college entrance could further strengthen the influence of education background and lead to greater demand for college entrance competition. Under the condition where the labor market evaluation of applicants is almost completed according to the rank of their respective college, it is also likely that applicants will be far less motivated to develop themselves through college education. This study implies that the fundamental difference between countries’ education systems can be determined by the relative strength between the primary screening and the secondary screening in the labor market.
