원시주의가 현대도예에 미친 미학적 경향

국문 초록

18세기의 식민주의와 계몽주의의 영향으로 생겨난 원시주의는 근대인들에게 새로운 문화로 비쳐졌다. 그러한 경향이 미국의 추상 표현주의를 기점으로 한 1950년대의 현대도예에서 새롭게 조망되기 시작했다. 그 당시에는 기계문명에 찌들었던 현대 예술가들에게 원초적이며, 생명력 있는 미술형식을 갈망하게 만들었기 때문이다. 이러한 현대도예의 흐름에서 원시주의는 도예가들에게 본능과 직관에 입각한 생명력의 이미지를 표출하게 만들었다. 아울러 점토에 대한 인식 변화와 더불어 다양한 표현기법을 시도하기 시작했다. 특히 근대 회화에서 아프리카, 오세아니아 등지의 원시부족들의 작품들에 내재해 있던 특성들을 작품에 차용하기 시작했다. 본 연구에서는 현대도예에서의 그러한 탈 근대양식적인 경향의 하나로 등장했던 원시주의 도예를 고전적ㆍ의고주의적 경향, 감각적ㆍ탈 형식적 경향, 그리고 상징적ㆍ추상적 경향으로 구분하고 고찰했다. 첫째, 고전적ㆍ의고주의적 경향에서는 로빈슨, 볼코스, 테트코프스키, 솔드너 등의 작품을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 그들은 원시인이 즐겨 그렸던 물고기, 자연스러운 형태, 토기 파편, 빗살문양, 나뭇잎 문양 등을 차용하였다. 그럼으로써 의고전주의적인 경향의 작품세계를 전개했다. 둘째, 감각적ㆍ탈 형식적 경향에서는 볼코스, 카사노바스, 훼르뷔엘, 퐁크, 헨더슨, 로운데스 등의 작품을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 그들은 켈트족, 아프리카 원시부족 등의 작품에 등장하는 형태들을 차용하고 거기에 즉흥성과 우연성의 효과를 가미함으로써 새로운 표현영역을 개척하였다. 셋째, 상징적ㆍ추상적 경향에서는 짐머만, 바일르, 코퍼 등의 작품을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 그들은 아프리카 부족미술, 선사시대 원시미술, 고대 이집트나 키클라데스 미술의 기하학적 형태들을 차용하였다. 이렇듯이 현대 도예가들이 탈 근대양식의 일환으로서 원시 부족의 미술에서 다양한 소재들을 차용하고 그것들을 다양한 기법으로 소화해낸 작품들에서는 생명력이 충만한 심미성을 발견할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Primitivism, influenced from Colonialism and Enlightenment in the 18th century, was recognized as a new culture for the modern people. Such a trend began to be newly reviewed in modern ceramics, the Abstract Expressionistic ceramics, of the 1950s. At that time, owing to the negative effect of mechanic civilization, it made modern ceramists yearn for a primitive, lively art form. In the stream of modern ceramics, primitivism urged the ceramists to represent the images of vitality based upon instinct and intuition. And they began to attempt various rendering techniques as well as a change in recognition for the clay. In particular, the modern painting artists began to borrow the characters hidden in tribe art of Africa, Australia, etc. In this paper, I studied such a trend which appeared as one of post- modern style ceramics from three standpoints as the ClassicalㆍArchaic, Emotionalㆍ Formless, and SymbolicalㆍAbstract. Firstly, as for the ClassicalㆍArchaic Trend, I studied with artworks by Robinson, Voulkos, Tetkowski, Soldner, etc. They borrowed fish, natural form, earthenware fragment, teeth pattern, leaf pattern, etc. that the tribe people preferably painted. By doing so, they came to develop the world of archaism. Secondly, as for the EmotionalㆍFormless Trend, I studied with artworks by Voulkos, Casanovas, Verwiel, Henderson, Lowndes, etc. They borrowed the forms appearing at the artworks by the Celtic, African tribe, etc., to which they added the effects of spontaneity and accident, and exploited a new realm of expression. Thirdly, as for the SymbolicalㆍAbstract Trend, I studied with artworks by Zimmerman, Bayle, Coper, etc. They borrowed the geometrical forms appearing at the artworks by the African tribe, pre-historic primitivism, ancient Egyptian or Cyclades. Likewise, from the artworks that modern ceramists, as a way to be out of modern style, borrowed various subject-matters from the tribe art, and digested them with various techniques, we can find out the aesthetic attribute full of vitality.
