국문 초록

근대 시기 우리나라는 서구문물의 유입 등으로 다양한 문화적 변화를 겪는다. ‘근대’라는 이름 아래 각종 서구문화의 패러다임들이 생산되었는데, 그 중 하나가 서구적 의미의 여가 유입이다. 이는 조선인들에게 문화적 도피처를 제공하면서 동시에 새로운 열망을 불러일으켰다. 당시 근대 여가문화는 하나의 권력 장치로 기능했으며, 이 권력의 생산 및 확산의 중심에는 인쇄 매체가 있었다. 특히 여름 여가는 다른 계절 여가에 비해 세시풍속의 영향을 덜 받았기 때문에 단 시간 내에 큰 변화를 겪게 된다. 여가문화는 근대적인 모습으로 정착하고 있었지만 대중들에게 모순적으로 인식되었다. 특히 ‘주체와 타자’에 대한 인식과 ‘공간’에 대한 인식에서 이중적인 모습을 보였다. 우선 ‘주체와 타자’의 문제에서, 여가를 즐기는 중산층 지식인은 모범 문화인의 전범으로 근대 주체의 위치에 있었지만, 동시에 끊임없이 중심문화를 모방하고 욕망하는 주변인으로서의 위치에 놓여있었다. 다음 ‘공간’의 문제에서, 여름 여가 공간은 새로운 문화를 접하며 근대적 패션과 유희를 즐길 수 있는 욕망의 공간이면서, 동시에 지나친 소비와 타락한 애욕이 펼쳐지는 위험한 공간으로 인식되었다. 여름 여가는 이런 이중적이고 모순적인 시선 속에서 근대 문화의 하나로 정착하게 되었다.

영문 초록

In the beginning of modern times, Korea faced a variety of cultural changes for such causes as the inflow of Western civilization. Under the name of ‘modernism’, many different paradigms of Western culture were produced, and one of them is the inflow of leisure with Western meaning. This did provide Chosun people with a cultural shelter and also arouse a new sort of aspiration. At that time, modern leisure culture worked as a kind of device of power, and in the center of the production and spread of this power, there were printed media. Especially, summertime leisure was less influenced by seasonal customs than leisure of the other seasons, so it faced great changes within a short period of time. Leisure culture was being settled down with modernistic aspects, but by the public, it was recognized ironically. Particularly, in the recognition of ‘subjects and others’ and ‘space’, it indicated dualistic aspects. First of all, in the matter of ‘subjects and others’, the middle-class intellects enjoying leisure were positioned as modernistic subjects as exemplary culture people, but at the same time, they were positioned as peripheral people constantly imitating and wanting the central culture. Next, in the matter of ‘space’, summertime leisure space was recognized not only as the space of desire where they could encounter new culture and enjoy modernistic fashion and amusement but also as the space of risk where excessive consumption and spoiled love and lust were unfolded. With this dualistic and ironic eye on it, summertime leisure was becoming positioned as a kind of modern culture.
