『무정』의 계몽주의 재고 - 서사구성 및 주제 구현상의 특징을 중심으로 -

이광수의 『무정』은 지속적으로 폭넓게 연구되어 왔지만, 서사구조에 대한 철저한 분석을 통해 계몽주의소설로서의 특성을 살피는 일은 여전히 요청된다. 실증적인 텍스트 분석을 통하여 󰡔무정󰡕의 계몽주의가 보이는 특성을 규명하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 『무정』은 중심인물들의 관계를 일찍 고정시킨 뒤 그들 각각의 반복적이고 점증적인 각성을 통해 작품의 주제효과를 구현, 강화하고 있다. 인물들의 각성과 관련하여 두 가지 사실이 중요하다. 하나는 이러한 각성들이 사랑에 관련되어 있다는 점이며, 다른 하나는 실정적으로 규정할 수 없는 각성의 내용보다 각성의 과정 자체가 의미를 갖는다는 점이다. 『무정』이 보이는 각성의 서사 구성은 이 소설의 주제효과를 근대소설다운 것으로 만들고 서사의 객관성을 강화하는 효과를 낳는다. 계몽주의소설로서 『무정』이 보이는 특징은, 개성이나 자유연애, 내적 생활 등과 같은 근대성의 지표들을 실정화하지 않고 그 구체적인 내용을 교설적으로 제시하지도 않는다는 데 있다. 이러한 양상은, 서구화로서의 근대화에 대한 갈망은 있되 그것을 실현할 구체적이고 실정적인 방법은 주어지지 않은 1910년대 조선의 상황에 대한 탁월한 반영이라 할 만하다. 이러한 반영의 현실성과 적실성이 냉정한 서술자의 존재에 의해 강화되고 있는 것 또한 특징적이다.

영문 초록

Yi GwangSu’s “Heartlessness[無情]” has been studied continuously and extensively. But it is still needed to investigate the characteristics of the work as an enlightenment novel through scrutiny and analysis of narrative structure. The goal of this study is to characterize the enlightenment of “Heartlessness” through thorough positive text analysis. In “Heartlessness”, the relations among major characters are determined at the early stage and then the repetitive and incremental awakenings of major characters realize and fortify the theme-effects. As for the awakenings, two facts are significant. The one is that these awakenings are related to love, and the other is that the procedure of awakening is significant rather than the result or content of awakening which is not defined positively. The structure of awakening in “Heartlessness” formulates the theme-effects as befitted a modern novel and fortifies the objectiveness of it’s narrative. As an enlightenment novel “Heartlessness” neither makes positive nor expresses didactically the concrete contents of modernity elements such as individuality, free love, inner life etc. This is a prominent reflection of the situation in the 1910s, where aspirations for the modernization as westernization can’t find tangible methods to realize themselves. It should not be overlooked that the existence of the cool-headed narrator intensifies the reality and correctness of the reflection.
