공정한 한국사회를 위한 한국교회의 역할

국문 초록

본 논문은 한국 교회가 공정한 한국 사회 실현을 위해 기여할 수 있는 바를 고찰함에 있어서 제네바의 종교개혁자 존 칼빈(John Calvin, 1509-1564)을 모델로 삼았다. 16세기 사회적 상황에서 칼빈의 공정성(fairness) 이해는 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑을 기초로 한 개념이며 하나님께서 부여하신 율법을 지키고 상호간에 사랑의 직무를 행하는 것에 집중된다. 여기에서부터 곤경에 처한 자에 대한 배려가 도출되며 다른 사람의 소유를 존중하는 정신도 생겨난다. 공정한 제네바 사회를 위한 칼빈의 역할은 크게 법률 전문가로서의 역할, 교회 지도자로서의 역할로 나누어서 생각될 수 있다. 먼저 법률전문가로서 그는 <교회법령>을 작성하여 교회 내에서 협력정신과 질서를 확립함으로써 공정성을 추구하였다. 또한 제네바 시에서 제네바시민법 개정에 동참하였고 사치금지법을 위시한 다양한 법률제정에 간접적으로 영향력을 행사함으로써 공정한 사회 실현에 이바지하였다. 공정한 제네바 건설을 위한 칼빈의 실질적 역할은 그의 교회지도자로서의 역할을 통해 더욱 구체적으로 드러났다. 집사제도의 확립을 통해서 제네바의 구빈원의 내실 있는 운영이 이루어지게 되었으며 이를 통해 가난한 자들이 더욱 공정한 환경 속에서 살 수 있는 여건이 마련될 수 있었다. 프랑스기금은 제네바에 정착한 프랑스피난민들을 돕기 위한 일종의 자발적 제도로서 구호활동 뿐 아니라 모든 피난민들의 자녀들에게 그들의 능력에 걸맞은 교육 환경을 제공함으로써 공정한 제네바 실현에 기여할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 이러한 칼빈의 본보기로부터 한국교회가 공정한 한국사회 구현을 위해서 공헌할 수 있는 바를 다음의 다섯 가지로 나누어 제안했다: 사회봉사를 위한 예배와 교회 교육의 회복과 실천, 집사제도의 재고를 통한 교회 내의 공정성 확보, 기독교 윤리의 보편성에 나타난 공정성에 대한 강조, 사회봉사에 있어서 전문성 확보를 통한 공정성의 확립, 사회 교육에 대한 관심과 실천.

영문 초록

This article focuses on the role of Korean Church to the realization of fair Korean society. It is the author's conviction that Calvin's role in development of fair society in Geneva during 16th century can function as a good model for accomplishing our purpose of achieving a fair Korean society and the role of Korean church for this purpose. In 16th century social setting, Calvin's understanding of fairness in Genevan society was largely based upon the concept of love for God and love for the neighbor. Fairness was sought on none other than the law of God showing great respect for divine love and its actual in terms of concern and care for the poor in the society. Calvin's practice for a fair society can be summarized in two categories of his ministry. First, Calvin pursued fairness as an expert in the field of law. He had written not only Ecclesiastical Ordinances (1541) for the Genevan church but also civil laws in the city including various laws. In Ecclesiastical Ordinances Calvin was able to show forth the concept of fairness by emphasizing corporate solidarity, collegiality, and equality among the pastors within the Genevan Church. Also he had indirectly influenced the legislation of the sumptuary law which was an attempt for equality to be reinforced regardless of one's status. Second, Calvin pursued fairness in society as a church minister. His influence can be seen in the establishment of deacons for proper care of the hospitals and Bourse française. Hospitals in Geneva, even though not directly under the control of the church, had exercised the duty of taking care of the poor with fairness. Bourse française had provided fair opportunities to the French refugees in Geneva for them to realize their potential by preparing funds, educational facilities, etc. In light of Calvin's ministry in Geneva, five suggestions are made for the Korean Church to possibly contribute for establishing a fair Korean society: recovery of worship and education for social service in the church, reconsideration of the current office of deacon in the church, emphasis on the universality of Christian ethics as a proper element for accomplishing fairness in the society, necessity for acquiring expertises in the field of social services in the church, necessity for education toward society.
