근현대 불교개혁론의 지평

국문 초록

본 논문은 한국 근현대 불교 개혁론의 이해, 연구의 지평을 넓혀 보려는 의도에서 작성된 고찰이다. 그러면서 이 글에서는 최근 근현대 불교 및 근현대 불교 개혁론에 대한 연구 에 대한 성찰을 제언하고 있다. 큰현대 분야의 연구에서의 과대평가, 착종, 누락 등의 행태를 지적하였다. 그리고 개혁론의 이해, 해설에 있어서도 지나치게 단면적, 미시적 연구가 주류를 이루고 있다는 전제하에 그 대안을 피력하였다. 이에 필자는 이 같은 연구 경향을 지적, 비판하면서 불교개혁론의 연구의 시야를 넓혀 보려는 의도를 표출하였다. 우선 근현대 불교개혁론의 개념을 살펴보고, 그 연후에는 개혁론으로 볼 수 있는 대상 전체를 조망하였다. 이로써 지난 100여년간 불교현장에서 나타났던 다양한 개혁론의 개요 및 성격을 조망할 수 있는 안목을 갖게 되었다. 그리고 나서 필자는 시론적으로 일제하의 불교, 해방공간의 불교, 1980∼90년대의 현장에서 구현된 개혁론을 보수와 진보라는 잣대로 설명해 보았다. 이런 시도가 일부분에서는 과도한 측면도 있겠지만 시론적으로 제시하였다. 그리고 개혁론 연구에서 유의할 초점도 대별하여 보았다. 본 본문은 불교개혁론을 직접적으로 분석한 고찰은 아니고, 불교개혁론의 연구의 지평을 확대하기 위한 제언 및 시론으로 집필된 것이다.

영문 초록

This research paper is consideration to the intention in order to extend prospect of understanding and study in Modern and Contemporary Buddhist Reforming Theory. I suggested introspection about the study of Modern and Contemporary Buddhist Reforming Theory recently through the paper. There was made to point out manner of overestimate, entangling and omission in studying on the field of modern and contemporary Buddhist history. And I stated frankly an alternative under the premise in consisting the mainstream of sectional area and microscopic study excessively on that point of understanding and exposition of reforming theory. Hereupon the author expressed intention to extend my view on study of Buddhist reforming theory in indicating and criticizing such tendency. First of all, as examining the definition of modern and contemporary Buddhist reforming theory, afterward I prospected the whole object regarding as reforming theory. With this I have an eye for ability to look at the outline which was appeared in various reforming theories on the spot of the Korean buddhist circles for the last hundred years and view on character. Then I tried to explain reforming theory which was realized buddhism under the Japanese Empire period, during the space of the Independent and the scene of the buddhist field between the nineteen eighties and nineties by standard of the conservatives and the progressives on a trial. This attempt seems to be excessive aspect, but I just suggested by way of experiment. And I classified roughly important focus on studying reforming theory. This paper is not consideration on Buddhist reforming theory directly. The paper is written as a trial for suggestion and an essay in order to extend the prospect of researching Buddhist reforming theory.
