로마가톨릭교회의 마리아론에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

본고를 통해 논자는 개혁주의적 관점에서 로마 가톨릭교회의 마리아론에 대해서 논구해 보았다. 가톨릭에서는 마리아를 여신으로 숭배(latria)하는 것이 아니라 마리아에게 최대의 존경(hyper-dulia)을 표하는 것이라고 주장하여 왔다. 반면에 극단적인 개신교 비판가들은 가톨릭이 마리아를 여신으로 숭배해 왔다라고 비판하여 왔다. 따라서 우리는 가톨릭 교회의 마리아론을 정확하게 이해하고 비판해야 할 필요성이 있다고 할 것이다. 그러한 목적을 성취하기 위하여 본고에서는 가톨릭교회의 공식 문서들과 마리아론 교본들을 주요 관찰자료로 삼아보았다. 본고는 크게 두 부분으로 나누어진다. 서론에 이어지는 두 번째 부분에서는 (2) 로마 가톨릭 마리아론의 4대 기본 교의에 대해서 논구해 보았다. 4대 교의란 동정녀 마리아의 신적 모성 교의, 평생 동정성 교의, 원죄로부터 면제된 무염시태 교의, 몽소승천교의 등이다. 특히 마리아의 무염시태 교의와 몽소승천교의는 전혀 성경적인 근거가 없고, 다만 중세와 근현대 가톨릭신학자들과 신자들의 신심에 근거하여 교황이 선포한 교의들이라고 하는 점을 확인해 보았다. 또한 평생동정성 교의는 성경적으로 확인되지 않는 교의이기 때문에 신앙의 조항이 될 수 없다. 세 번째 부분에서는(3) 로마 가톨릭교회가 마리아에게 부여한 가장 중요한 위치와 역할인"중재자"(mediatrix) 교의에 대해서 살펴보았다. 가톨릭에 의하면 마리아는 그리스도와 신자들 사이에 모든 은혜의 중재자이며, 위하여 기도해 주는 중재자라고 한다. 그러나 개혁주의적 관점에서 볼 때에 이러한 마리아 중재 사상은 성경적으로 정당화될 수 없는 사상이며, 오히려 오랜 역사를 통해 형성되어진 신자들의 신심에 바탕하고 있다는 것을 지적하지 않을수가 없다. 결론적으로 말해서 로마 가톨릭의 마리아론은 많은 비성경적인 교의들로 구성이 되어 있으며, 말로는 마리아공경이라고 하지만 실제로는(de facto) 마리아를 그리스도와 동등한 반열에 놓는 우를 범하고 있다는 점을 지적하지 않을 수가 없다. 우리는 다시 한 번 마리아와 같은 신앙의 선조들의 신앙적 모범을 귀하게 여겨야 한다는 인식과 더불어서, 그리스도의 유일 중보자되심을 부인하거나 약화시키는 어떠한 마리아론이나 성인숭배 사상 등을 개혁주의적 관점에서 바로 비판하고 물리쳐야 한다는 점을 기억해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I discussed the Mariology of the Roman Catholic Church from the Reformed Theological perspective. Catholics have argued that they do not worship (dulia) Mary as a goddess, but they attribute the highest respect (hyperdulia) to her. On the contrary, the extremists of the Protestant Church have criticized that the Roman Catholics have worshiped Mary as a goddess. Therefore, there is a need for proper understanding and criticizing the Catholic Mariology. So, in this paper, I made a thorough research on the official documents and the textbooks of Mariology produced by the Roman Catholic Church. This paper is mainly divided into two parts. In the second chapter, following the introduction, I have dealt with the four basic dogmas of the Roman Catholic Mariology, which are (1) the dogma of the divine motherhood of the Virgin Mary (theotokos), (2) the dogma of the perpetual virginity, (3) the dogma of the immaculate conception exempt from original sin, and (3) the dogma of the assumption into heaven of Mary. I have argued that the dogmas of the immaculate conception and of the assumption into heaven of Mary are not grounded on the Bible at all. They are produced by the encyclicals of Popes on the basis of the opinions of various Catholic Theologians (from the Medieval period to the Contemporary times) and believers of common faith. In addition, we have observed that the dogma of the perpetual virginity cannot be forced as the article of faith, for it has no Biblical basis at all. In the third chapter, we looked at the dogma of mediatrix, which talks about the important position and role of Mary. Roman Catholics have asserted officially that Mary is the mediatrix of all grace between Christ and the Catholic believers, and she is the intercessor who prays for them. However, from the Reformed theological perspective the mediatrix thought cannot be justified biblically. It is only grounded on the faith of the Catholic believers and it has been shaped by a long historical procedure. In conclusion, we can say that the Roman Catholic Mariology is composed of the un-biblical dogmas, and they, de facto, put Mary on a par with Christ, although they acclaim that they gave highest respect to her. Therefore, we must rightly criticize and reject the Mariology as it denies or weakens the only mediatorship of Jesus Christ from the perspective of the Reformed theology.
