국문 초록

1884년 한국에 최초로 파송된 미국장로교 선교사 언더우드 이후, 한국교회는 전례 없는 교회 성장을 경험했다. 그러나 최근 한국교회는 양적면에서 정체와 감소에 직면하고 있다. 이에 대해서 저자는 연구에서 한국교회의 폭발적인 성장을 이끌었던 초기 한국 개신교선교의 성격을 규명하기 위해 주로 초기 한국선교사들이 지배적으로 가져온 미국장로주의와 초기 선교사역들을 평가한다. 초기 한국개신교의 성격에 관한 문헌에는 소위 보수주의와 진보주의 사이의 논쟁이 있어왔다. 보수주의는 한국개신교가 미국장로주의와, 초기 한국선 교사들이 공식적인 선교전략으로 확인한 네비우스 정책에 의해 지배적인 영향을 받았고, 긍정적인 의미로 교회 성장과 신학교육을 가져온'성경중심주의'라고 주장하는 자들에 의해서 지지를 받아왔다. 반면, 상대편에 속하는 진보적 학자들은'성경중심주의'를 반지성주의의 원인으로 부정적인 의미로 이해하면서 복음이 한국문화에 정착되는 과정에서 수용과 적응과 같은 한국 자국민들의 주관적인 역할을 상당히 많이 강조했다. 그러나 초기 한국선교사들이 이 기간 동안 수행했던 병원, 학교, 그리고 번역과 같은 선교사역들의 성격을 고려한다면,' 성경주의자'란 용어를 좁다란 보수적 의미로 그들의 정체성에 돌리는 것은 어렵다. 왜냐하면'성경주의자'로 그들은 자신들의 신학 안에서 그런 복음주의와 보편적인 선교사역을 수행하는 것이 가능했기 때문이다. 마센이(George M. Marsden) 주장하듯이, 성경주의는 미국에서의 미국장로주의의 독특한 성격이 아니라, 19세기와 20세기에 미국 교회의 일반적인 특징이다. 그리고 초기 한국선교사들은 학생자원운동의(SVM) 영향을 받았다고 여겨진다. 그런 맥락에서, 하비 콘(Harvie M. Conn)은 초기 선교사들이 가져온 미장로주의의 성격이"보수적 복음주의'로 바르게 기술한다. 그것은 초기 선교사들이 문명의 발전과 같은 한국 자국민의 요구를 고려하면서 주요한 선교전략으로'선포'를 상황화시켰고 그러한 사회문화적 정황에서 한국장로주의의 형성을 발전시켰다는 것을 의미한다. 그러한 이해야말로 한국교회가 오늘날 상황적 갱신과 부흥을 위해 반드시 염두 해야 할 근본적인 출발점일 것이다.

영문 초록

Ever since the first arrival of American missionary, Underwood, who was sent by PCUSA in 1884, Korean church had experienced an unprecedented church growth. However, recently, Korean church has faced stagnation and declination in number. In the paper, the author mainly evaluates American Presbyterianism and its initial missions in the Korean context in order to identify the nature of the early Korean Protestant mission, which led to an explosive church growth. In literature regarding the nature of the early Korean Protestantism, there have been arguments between so called conservatives and liberals. The former has been supported by those scholars who argue that Korean Protestantism was dominantly influenced by American Presbyterianism and the Nevius plan as an official mission strategy and was 'Biblicism' in a positive meaning, resulting in the growth of church and theological education. Meanwhile, the counterpart, so called liberal scholars, put much emphasis on the subjective role of the Korean natives such as accommodation and adaptation in the processes of planting the gospel, while understood 'Biblicism' in a negative way as the cause of anti-intellectualism. However, when considering the nature of missions such as hospital, school, and translation that the early Korean missionaries carried in that period, it is hard for us to attribute the term, 'Biblicist' to their identity in a narrowly conservative meaning because as Biblicist, they also carried such evangelical and ecumenical missions within their theology. As Marsen argued, Biblicism is not the unique characteristics of American Presbyterianism in America, but the general traits of the American church in the nineteenth century and twentieth centuries. And, it is also assumed that the early Korean missionaries were likely to be influenced by the ecumenical movement such as SVM(Student Voluntary Movement). In that vein, Conn rightly described the nature of American Presbyterianism the early missionaries had brought as "conservative evangelism." It means that the early missionaries contextualized the main missionary strategy, 'proclamation,' while considering the request of the native Koreans, which is the advancement of civilization, and developed the formation of Korean Presbyterianism in its socio-cultural context. Such an understanding would be the fundamental starting point where Korean church should have in mind for her contextual renewal and revival today.
