『만인보』의 인물 호명과 서사 진술 방식 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 『만인보』를 대상으로 인물의 호명 방식과 서사 진술 방식에 대하여 살펴본 것이다. 먼저 호명 방식의 특징을 살펴보았다. 역사적 인물에 대한 호명은 성과 이름을 갖춘 형태로 이루어져 객관성을 확보하였다. 이름 앞에 직업이나 직책을 두어 호명하는 방식은 독자에게 인물에 대한 사전 정보를 제공하는 장점이 있다. 이때 그 사전 정보는 반전의 효과를 가지는 경우가 많다. 별명으로 인물을 호명하는 방식의 장점은 인물에 대한 해학성을 드러낼 수 있다는 것과 인물에 얽힌 서사를 압축하여 전달하는 경제성이다. 다음으로 서사 진술 방식을 살펴보았다. 이는 논평 없이 사건만 서술하는 방식, 사건에 대하여 화자가 논평하는 방식, 인물을 통해 논평하는 방식 등으로 대별할 수 있다. 논평 없이 사건만 서술하는 방식에서 화자는 사건에 대한 객관적 기록만을 남길 뿐 사건에 대한 개입이나 전지적 논평을 시도하지 않는다. 이는 다성성을 담보할 수 있다는 장점을 지닌다. 사건에 대하여 화자가 논평하는 방식은 다성성은 소거되어 있으나 텍스트의 진술이 매우 명료하고 서사를 압축하며 화자가 지닌 세계관에 대하여 짐작할 수 있게 한다는 장점이 있다. 인물을 통해 논평하는 방식은 진술의 질감이 매우 교조적이라는 점이다. 작가가 직접 발화하는 형식을 피하였음에도 불구하고 메시지 자체가 교훈적이라는 점은 자칫 『만인보』를 경직된 시선으로 응시하게 할 우려가 있다.

영문 초록

In this article, based on Maninbo, we examined the method of mentioning characters and narration statement, regarding "the speaker with the viewpoint of the poet" without separating the author from the speaker. The greatest effect of mentioning one's occupation or position is the reversal. It turned out that readers was able to obtain advance information of a character through the occupation or position in front of the character's name and then the lexical meaning had a ironical effect in many cases. In case of calling a character his or her nickname, its advantage is that they can reveal a vein of humor of the character and deliver the condensed narration of the character economically. Next, we studied the methods of narration statement. As a result, we could categorized them as the way of narrating events without comment, the way that the speaker comments on the events and the way of commenting through a character. In the way of narrating events without comment, the speaker merely keeps an objective record of events and he does not try intervening in the events or making omniscient comment. It has an advantage of guaranteeing the diversity. In the way that the speaker comments on the events, diversity is eliminated, however, its merit is that the direction of statement in the text reveals the clarity, condenses the narration and enables you to assume the speaker's view of the world. The benefit of the way of commenting through a character is that the texture of the character's statement is very doctrinaire. Although the author tried not delivering the message rigidly by using his own narration, it is apprehended that Maninbo might be analyzed with a rigid view in terms that the message itself is instructive.
