국문 초록

본 연구는 가족동반을 허용하지 않는 고용허가제의 비전문취업(E-9)비자와 방문취업(H-2)비자로 들어오는 이주노동자의 배우자 한국거주 현황과 사회인구학적 특성을 살펴보고, 부부가 함께 한국이주를 하는 집단을 미혼 또는 배우자가 본국에 있는 이주노동자의 집단과 비교하여 한국생활의 차이를 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위해, 2010년 및 2013년 저숙련 외국인 이주노동자 대상 실태조사를 활용하였으며, 고용허가제 이주노동자(2010년 976명, 2013년 1,370명)와 방문취업제 중국동포(2010년 1,000명, 2013년 1,064명)를 대상으로 분석하였다. 저숙련 이주노동자의 한국생활은 경제생활(생활비지출, 송금, 저축), 주거생활(주거형태 및 주거비부담), 그리고 사회생활(한국생활고충, 한국어능력 및 생활만족도, 친구관계 등)을 통해 측정하였다. 본 연구의 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 고용허가제 이주노동자의 6~7%, 방문취업제 동포의 50% 이상이 배우자와 함께 한국이주생활을 하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 배우자가 한국에 있는 이주노동자가 미혼이나 본국에 배우자가 있는 이주노동자보다 한국체류기간이 길고, 다른 가족이나 친척도 한국에 들어와 있는 비율이 높다. 배우자가 한국에 있는 집단이 다른 집단에 비해 생활비를 조금 더 쓰고, 송금은 약간 적게 하고, 저축은 좀 더 하는 경향이 있지만 그 차이가 크지 않았다. 부부가 함께 한국에 거주하는 이주노동자들이라도 주거비용을 최대한 적게 들이는 방법으로 생활하였다. 배우자가 한국에 거주하는 이주노동자들이 다른 집단에 비해 외로움은 덜 느끼나 기혼자들의 경우 가족문제에서는 비슷하게 어렵게 느낀다. 이상의 연구결과로 저숙련 이주노동자가 가족전략으로서 국제이주를 적극적으로 활용하는 모습을 보여줄 수 있었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze how many low-skilled labor migrants have their spouse who also migrates to South Korea although their visa don’t allow to accompany their family, what are their socio-demographic characteristics and migration experience and their life in South Korea, compared to the single migrants or married migrants whose spouse is in the country of origin. The data for this study comes from the sample surveys conducted in 2010 and 2013 with low-skilled labor migrants under Employment Permit System. The data include the questionnaire responses from the E-9 visa migrant workers of 976 in 2010 and 1,370 in 2013 and the Visit Work (H-2) visa Korean Chinese of 1,000 in 2010 and 1,064 in 2013. The low-skilled labor migrants’ life in South Korea is measured by the dimensions such as the economic life (living expenses, remittance, saving), the housing life (forms of housing, rate of living in company-sponsored housing), and the social life (difficulties of Korean life, Korean language skill, life satisfaction, social relations with native or Korea friends, etc.). This study tests whether there is any significant differences of low-skilled labor migrants’ life in South Korea depending on their marital status and their spouse’s migration status. The findings revealed that, 6-7% of the EPS(Employment Permit System) migrant workers and more than 50% of the Working Visit Korean Chinese are living with their spouse in South Korea. Migrant workers with their spouse in South Korea not only are staying longer in Korea but also have a higher proportion of their family members or relatives living in Korea than the other groups. In addition, this migrant workers with their spouse living in South Korea spend a little more to the cost of living, remitting slightly less, and saving a little more compared to the other groups, but it was not much of difference. Even couples of migrant workers living in Korea choose their housing in a way of minimizing the costs as possible. The migrant workers with their spouse living in South Korea feel less loneliness, but they are not much different from the migrant workers with their spouse living in country of origin in experiencing difficulty in family issues. The findings of this study seem important in showing one good example of how actively low-skilled migrant workers make use of international migration as a family strategy.
