Evolution of Marriage Contracts under Conformism

국문 초록

결혼 제도는 경제적 환경의 변화에 조응하여 발전하게 되는데, 가부장적인 제도는 여성의 시장참여가 늘어남에도 불구하고 오랫동안 지속되어 왔다. 본 연구는 가부장적 사회 규범에 순응하려는 개인들의 성향이 보다 평등한 결혼 제도로의 진화를 더디게 하는 한 요인이 될 수 있다고 보고, 확률론적 진화 게임이론을 사용하여 가부장제에서 평등한 결혼 계약으로의 진화과정을 분석하였다. 모형을 이용하여 가부장적 결혼 제도와 평등한 결혼 제도 각각이 균형이 되는 조건을 구하였다. 분석 결과에 따르면 경제적 환경의 변화로 평등한 결혼 계약이 가부장적 결혼 계약에 비해 더 효율적임에도 불구하고 기존의 가부장제도에 대한 순응주의가 강한 경우, 평등한 계약으로의 이전이 일어나지 않고 가부장제도가 유지될 수 있다. 또한 순응주의가 강한 경우 가부장적 계약에서 평등한 계약으로의 진화에 걸리는 시간이 그 반대의 경우보다 길어짐을 보였다.

영문 초록

Why have patriarchal family institutions remained so persistent? Could stronger conformism to patriarchal norms retard the evolution of more egalitarian contracts even when egalitarian contracts are in some respects more efficient? To address these questions, I study the evolution of marriage contracts from patriarchal to egalitarian forms. In particular, I explore the ways in which normative dynamics such as asymmetric conformity could shape the evolution of marriage contracts-specifically, the equilibrium selection and the time that elapses in the transition from one contract equilibrium to another. I set up a micro stochastic process model to study the equilibrium selection of marriage contracts in various economic environments. Using parameters capturing the payoff within families and the degree of conformism between families of each contract, the model identifies the parameter range in which even though the egalitarian contract is optimal choice within family, the patriarchal contract pervades due to the strong conformism. Also I aggregate the micro stochastic process to obtain macro level stochastic process, which is the Birth and Death Markov process, to calculate the fixation probabilities of patriarchal and egalitarian regime. The result shows that the transition time from a patriarchal to an egalitarian equilibrium can be longer than the opposite direction under conformism.
