문화의 탈경계 현상과 연결되는 다섯 용어에 대한 검토

국문 초록

문화의 탈경계 현상을 설명할 때 흔히 사용되는 용어는 통섭(consilience), 퓨전(fusion), 컨버전스(convergence) 등이다. 그와 관련되는 용어는 복합공간(complex)과 절합(articulation) 등이다. 이 두 개념은 탈경계현상이 구체화되어 실현되는 사례 및 추가 개념으로 이해될 수 있을 것이다. 보통 이 용어들은 명료하게 구별되지 않고 사용되는 경향이 있다. 물론 이들 개념이 서로 간에 깊은 영향을 주고받는 측면이 있지만, 사실상 그 의미들은 각기 독립적이면서 각자의 방식으로 탈경계 현상은 물론, 문화콘텐츠학과 관계 맺을 수 있다. 그러나 사용자들이 혼동하면서 쓰는 까닭에 문화콘텐츠학에 있어서의 특정 대상에 대한 분석이 엄밀하게 이루어지지 못하기도 했다. 본고는 이 부분에 착안하여, 이 다섯 가지 용어들의 정의에 대해 검토해 보고자 했다. 이 다섯 가지 개념의 검토를 통해 필자가 의도하려 한 바는 문화콘텐츠학에서의 탈경계 현상이 어떻게 이야기되어야 하는지, 또한 전개되어야 하는지를 고민해 보는 것이다. 향후, 통섭, 퓨전, 컨버전스, 복합공간, 절합이라는 다섯 가지 용어는 탈경계현상이 많은 특정의 문화콘텐츠 사례들을 분석하는 데 있어서 나름대로 중요한 역할을 담당하게 될 가능성이 많을 듯하다. 이 다섯 용어에 대한 적절한 사용은 문화콘텐츠학에 있어서 다양한 탈경계 상황들을 보다 더 잘 이해하고 분석할 수 있게 해주는 하나의 출발점이 될 수 있으리라 생각한다.

영문 초록

Commonly used terms when explaining the phenomenon of the trans-boundaries of culture includes consilience, fusion, and convergence. Related terms include complex and articulation, which can be understood respectively as an example and an additional concept. These terms are often used interchangeably. This may be due to the fact that these concepts have been influencing each other. Looked at more closely, however, we can find that these concepts have their own ways to relate to the phenomenon of the trans-boundaries (of culture) and cultural contents studies. Due to the confusion in the use of these terms, the descriptions of a specific object in cultural contents studies have not been as rigorous as one could hope for. Based on this observation, this paper attempts to examine the definitions of these five terms. Through the examination, it is hoped that it gives the reader an opportunity to think deeply about how we can understand the phenomenon of the trans-boundaries of culture and also how it may be developed. It is argued that the five terms are likely to play important roles in the future when analyzing the individual trans-boundary cases of cultural contents. Using these terms more precisely and appropriately will be a starting point that enables us to better understand and analyze the various phenomenon of the trans-boundaries of culture.
