이 논문은 기원전 4세기 아테네 수사학 교사 이소크라테스의 교육사상을 재발견하려는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구자는 이소크라테스의 교육연설문 두 편-『소피스트들에 대하여』와 『안티도시스』-을 통해 그의 교육사상을 때때로 동시대 경쟁자였던 플라톤의 그것과 비교하면서 분석한다. 제Ⅱ장에서는 이소크라테스가 당대 한 사람의 소피스트였다는 점을 주목하여, 기원전 5세기 아테네 사회에서 활동했던 소피스트들의 사상을 절대적 지식에 대한 회의주의적 관점과 상대주의적 지식관을 중심으로 개략적으로 검토한다. 제Ⅲ장에서는 이소크라테스 자신이 당대 다른 소피스트들에 대해서 갖고 있었던 비판적인 생각들을 『소피스트들에 대하여』를 통해서 정리한다. 이소크라테스는 이 연설문에서 두 부류의 교사, 곧 윤리학 영역에서 공론만을 일삼는 논쟁주의자 교사들과 소위 정치연설의 기법을 가르친다고 공언하는 수사학학교 교사들을 비판한다. 그리고 제Ⅳ장에서는 지식이라는 것, 그것을 다루는 철학이라는 것, 그리고 그것을 통한 교육이라는 것에 대해서 이소크라테스가 보이고자 했던 생각들을 『안티도시스』를 통해서 분석한다. 이소크라테스의 시각에서 보면 '말을 잘 하는 것'은 모든 문화와 교육의 원천이 된다. 그는 수사학적 능력, 곧 훌륭한 연설을 행하는 능력을 인간에게 허용된 건전한 이해와 판단의 능력을 입증하는 지표로 본다. 한 영혼이 탁월성과 성실성을 지니고 있다는 말은 곧 그가 진실되고 적법하며 정의로운 담론을 수행할 수 있다는 말과 같다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to rediscover the educational ideas of the Athenian rhetoric teacher, Isocrates, on the basis of his two discourses, "Against the Sophists" and "Antidosis". In chapter 2, the author analyzes the philosophical ideas of the people who were called the 'sophists' in the 5th century Athene in that Isocrates was himself a sophist. The focus is made on how those teachers thought about the view that there is an absolute knowledge about absolute beings, and what they argued about the relativity of kowledge, In chapter 3, the author investigates how Isocrates speaks about other sophists of his days. He blames those corrupted and degenerated teachers who, on the one hand, were called the 'eristics' in the field of ethics and, on the other hand, claimed to teach every technique by which to win the opponent in the court. These sophists are the one who gave the corrupted image to the honorable name, 'sophist'. And in chapter 4, what Isocrates argues about the knowledge that humans can have, the discipline called 'philosophia' that studies about it, and the education through this discipline is analyzed. From Isocrates' view, excellent speech is the fountainhead of all cultures and education. He regards the ability of speech as the indicator of sound understanding and judgment owned only by humans. He argues that one who possesses excellence and faithfulness is one who has the ability to make faithful, just, and legally proper speeches.
