The Relationship between Entering a Continuing Care Retirement Community and Leisure Activity Participation of the Elderly

국문 초록

본 연구는 노인들의 실버타운 입주가 그들의 여가활동에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 노인들의 실버타운 입주 전과 입주 후의 여가활동을 비교 분석해 봄으로써 노인들만이 모여 사는 새로운 환경의 실버타운이 노인들의 여가활동에 어떤 영향을 미치는가에 대해 조사하였다. 이 연구를 위하여 본 연구자가 개발한 노인들의 여가활동 참가정도를 측정하는 노인여가활동지표(Leisure Activity Scale for Seniors: LAS-5)를 사용하였는데 본 LAS-S는 72가지 여가활동으로 구성되었으며 다시 8가지 영역으로 나뉘었다. 본 연구의 참가자는 펜실베니아주 Cornwall에 있는 실버타운의 166명 입주자들로 이루어 졌다. 본 연구결과 실버타운 입주 후에 여가활동에 있어서 많은 변화가 일어난 것으로 조사되었는데 총 여가활동의 3분의 2가 실버타운 입주 후 변화한 것으로 나타났다. 이 변화들 중 한 부분은 여가기회의 근접성과 유효성에 의해 설명되어질 수 있다. 전반적으로 노인들의 여가활동이 감소하였고 여자들이 남자들보다 더 감소한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 노인들의 실버타운 입주일수가 길면 길수록 여가활동에 있어 다소 증가하는 추세를 보였는데 이는 실버타운이라는 새로운 환경으로의 적응성이 더 증가하는 것으로 해석되어질 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of entering a Continuing Care Retirement Community(CCRC) on the leisure activity participation of the elderly. More specifically, the study examined differences in leisure activity participation patterns before and after entering a CCRC. To accomplish the purpose of this study, the investigator used a new instrument called the Leisure Activity Scale for Seniors (LAS-S), which measures the leisure activity participation level of older adults. The 72 leisure activities created for the LAS-S were categorized by 8 leisure activity domains according to the typology. A total of 166 residents of the Cornwall Manor CCRC in Pennsylvania participated in this study. This study found that entering a CCRC was associated with a high level of change in leisure activity participation. Almost two-thirds of all leisure activities had changed after moving to the age-segregated environment. These changes are partly explainable by proximity and availability of leisure opportunities. This study also found a general trend toward constriction of activity and somewhat greater constraint to female activity than male activity. In addition this study found somewhat greater expansion of leisure activities among resident having longer length of residence at the CCRCs, implying that residents having longer living experience in a new environment are more inclined to adapt.
