노년학 교육이 대학생의 노인에 대한 태도에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 노년학 교육이 대학생들의 노인에 대한 태도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가들 규명하는데 있다. 이러한 목적을 위하여 남녀 대학생 62명에게 노인에 관한 지식과 경험을 갖도록 한 학기동안 강의와 일정한 활동에 참여하도록 하였다. 동일내용의 질문지를 사용하여 강의 첫 시간과 마지막 시간에 노인에 대한 태도를 조사하였으며, 각 활동에 대한 학생들의 보고를 수집하였다. 결과 처리는 요인분석, t-test, 그리고 내용분석으로 하였다. 본 연구결과 첫째, 대학생들은 노년학 교과과정을 통해 노인에 대한 태도가 긍정적으로 바뀌었다. 구체적으로 노인의 자립성, 유능성, 인성 수용성에 대한 태도가 사전검사에 비해 사후검사에서 모두 긍정적인 방향으로 변화한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 노인과의 접촉 및 활동을 통해 대학생들은 노인에 대한 보다 깊은 이해와 노인 정책 등 노인에 관한 현실을 정확하게 인식하게 되었으며, 자기 반성을 통하여 현재 상황을 성찰하는 기회를 갖게 되었으며, 노인 이해와 배려를 통한 세대간 관계에 대한 관심을 갖게 되었고, 노인을 위해서 해야 할 자신의 역할이 무엇이며, 더 나아가 자신의 노년기를 어떻게 준비해 나갈 것인가에 대하여 새로운 인식을 갖게 된 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 젊은이들을 대상으로 노년학 교육의 실시가 매우 필요함을 시사해준다.

영문 초록

The present research investigated whether or not an undergraduate gerontology course had a positive influence on students' perceptions about elderly people and related matters. In order to examine the issue of concern, sixty-two male and female undergraduate received a series of classroom lectures on gerontology, as well as participated in diverse activities to experience elderly lives including interviewing elderly people. A survey was administered with the students at the beginning of the first day of class and at the end of the semester. Results from the analyses of the rating data indicate that as an consequence of taking the gerontology course, students developed more favorable attitudes toward aging and older adults on various dimensions such as independence(p<.001), effectivity(p<.01), and personal acceptability(p<.05). Moreover, the content analyses of students' reports suggest that (1) participation the experiential activities induced them to seriously think about aging and elderly-related issues, (2) increased their interest level in intergenerational relationships of caring and understanding, and (3) led them to feel the necessity to systematically prepare for their own future as an elderly person. Thus, we conclude that design and implementation of elderly people-related formal education programs is very important. Such programs will equip young people with accurate knowledge of aging and help them to develop a more positive attitude toward the elderly as well as toward their own aging.
