미국거주 한인노인들의 노인학대 실태

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 캘리포니아주 산타 클라라 카운티에 거주하는 60세 이상 한인 노인들의 학대실태 및 학대에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 규명하기 위하여 2002년 10월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 약 3개월에 걸쳐서 실시되었다. 모집단의 약 10%에 해당하는 420명을 표집하여 직접면담 및 설문조사를 이용하여 수집된 자료는 230부였으나 자료로 이용하기 곤란한 25부를 제외하여 최종적으로 통계분석에 이용된 자료는 205부이다. 연구결과에 따르면 조사대상자들의 16.3%가 노인학대를 경험하였다고 응답하였으며 가장 빈번하게 경험하는 노인학대 유형으로는 언어적 학대가 가장 높았으며 그 다음으로는 정서적 학대, 방치, 경제적 착취, 그리고 육체적 학대의 순으로 밝혀졌다. 또한 노인학대를 경험한 적이 있다고 응답한 사람의 30.5%는 거의 매일 노인학대를 경험하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 노인학대에 영향을 미치는 요인을 규명하기 위하여 도입한 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과에 따르면 연령이 높을수록 그리고 여성이 남성에 비해 학대를 받을 가능성이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 경제적 자립도가 낮을수록 노인학대의 희생자가 될 가능성이 높으며 이혼하거나 사별하여 배우자가 없는 한인 노인들이 배우자가 있는 한인 노인들보다 학대를 받을 가능성이 높은 것으로 본 연구결과 밝혀졌다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 미국에 거주하는 한인 노인들의 학대 실태를 체계적으로 규명하고 나아가 한인 노인들의 학대문제를 완화하고 개선하기 위한 여러 가지 형태의 정책적 대안들이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

The main purposes of this study are to describe the elder abuse and neglect and to explore the factors that impact on elder abuse and neglect among Korean Americans in Santa Clara county, California, USA. In this study, two research methods, such as a survey with questionnaire and a face-to-face interview, were introduced. Four hundreds and twenty Korean Americans above 60 years old were chosen as a sample and two hundreds and thirty were available for data collection. Data collection was conducted from October 1st to December 31st, 2002. For the Statistical analysis finally 202 cases out of 230 cases were used. Findings of this study are as follows: 16.3 percent of the respondents answer that they experience the elder abuse and neglect and 35 percent of the elderly who have experienced abuse and neglect reveal that they experience the mistreatment at least once a day. Among the types of elder abuse and neglect, verbal abuse is the highest(30.3%), and emotional abuse(24.2%), neglect(18.2%), economic exploitation(15.2%), and physical abuse(12.1%) follow in this order. Among the Perpetrators, daughters-in-law(43.8%) are the highest and spouses(28.1%) and sons and daughters are following the next respectively. According to the logistic regression analysis, it tums out that female and age increase the odds ratio of elder abuse among Korean American who are above 60 in Santa Clara county, California, USA and are statistically significant. On the other hand, the level of economical independence of the respondents and respondents with spouses decrease the odds ratios of elder among the Korean American above 60 in Santa Clara county. Finally, policy implications and some suggestions for the improvement of the elder abuse and neglect for the Korean Americans in USA are introduced and discussed.
