듀이의 헤르바르트 흥미 개념 비판의 정당성

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 헤르바르트와 듀이의 교육사상에 유사점과 차이점을 단순 비교, 나열하는 서술에서 벗어나 헤르바르트와 듀이의 교육사상의 연관성에 주목한다. 특히, 헤르바르트와 듀이의 '흥미'에 대한 논의를 중심으로 한다. 헤르바르트는 『일반교육학』에서 처음 선보인 교육적 수업이론에서 흥미를 핵심개념으로 제시하고 있다. 듀이 역시 학습자의 흥미가 교육에 우선시되어야 함을 주장한다. 그래서 구체적으로 헤르바르트의 다면적 흥미와 듀이의 교육적 흥미를 서술한다. 헤르바르트는 수업의 일차적인 목표를 다면적 흥미의 양성으로 설정한다. 수업의 성패는 다면적 흥미의 양성에 달려있다는 것이다. 이렇게 볼 때, 헤르바르트의 흥미개념은 그의 교육적 수업이론의 핵심이라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 듀이는 훈련과 의지를 연관하여 흥미의 개념을 밝힌다. 특히, 듀이의 초기 논문인 의지의 훈련의 연관성에서 흥미(Interest in Relation to Training of the Will) 에서 헤르바르트와 헤르바르트주의자들의 흥미에 대한 논의를 비판하고 있다. 여기서 헤르바르트와 듀이의 흥미를 연관성에 초점을 맞추어 비교한다는 것은 의미있는 작업이다. 의지의 훈련에 연관성에서 흥미(Interest in Relation to Training of the Will) 에서 논의하고 있는 듀이의 헤르바르트 비판의 내용이 무엇인지, 그리고 그 비판이 어느정도 정당한지를 논의하고자 한다.

영문 초록

In this thesis simiarities and differences between educational ideas of Herbart and Dewey are not simply shown but the relationship of Herbart and Dewey's educational ideas is focused here. Particularly, the discussion by Herbart and Dewey on 'Interest' will become a main point. In 'The Science of Education(Allgemeine Pädagogik)' Herbart suggested 'Interest' as a focal concept in the educational class theory that was first introduced by him. Dewey stressed that learners' interest should come first in education. Therefore, Herbart's many-sided interest and Dewey's educational interest will be mentioned in detail. Herbart set the primary objective of the class as generation of many-sided interest. The success or failure of the class depends on whether many-sided interest is generated or not. In this sense, it is needless to say that Herbart's concept of interest is also the main point of his educational class theory. Dewey explained the concept of interest in connection with training and will. Especially, in Dewey's early thesis, 'Interest in Relation to Training of the Will', he critized what Herbart and followers of Herbatianism had discussed on interest. It show that Dewey was influenced by Herbart's theory of interest and thus, it will be quite meaningful to focus on the interest in relation of Herbart and Dewey and compare them. What Dewey criticized about Herbart's in 'Interest in Relations to Training of the Will' and how appropriate his criticism was will be discussed here.
