미국 이민사회에 적응해 가는 1세 이민자들의 문화적응 과정과 교회의 역할

국문 초록

오랫동안 단일민족임을 자부하던 한국이 급속한 속도로 다문화사회가 되어가고 있다. 이러한 다문화사회 혹은 복합문화사회속에서 학습공동체로서의 교회는 어떠한 역할을 감당해야 할까? 복합문화속에서 이주노동자들은 어디에서 주로 문화적응과정을 학습하게 되며, 어떠한 상황들이 그들의 학습동기를 유발하는 것일까? 우리보다 이민역사가 훨씬 긴 미국에 이민간 한국인 1세들의 경우, 이민역사가 제법 길어지고 있음에도 불구하고, 이민1세들의 학습과 교육, 그리고 그에 따른 교회의 역할에 대한 연구는 그다지 많지 않다. 본 논고에서는 미국으로 이민한 한인 1세들의 성인학습 실태와 그들이 학습에 참여하게 되는 동기, 그리고 학습조직으로서의 교회의 역할과 복합문화속에서 기대되는 목회리더십의 특성들에 대하여 다루고 있다. 한국에 이주해와 있는 이주민들과 상황이 같을 수는 없겠지만, 우리보다 훨씬 더 다양한 민족과 인종들이 어울려 살고 있는 미국이라는 복합문화속에서 한국인이라는 단일문화를 형성하고 있는 한인 이민 1세대들의 실태를 살펴봄으로, 현재 한국에 이주해온 이민자들을 어떻게 효과적으로 돕고 섬길수 있는지에 대한 교회의 구체적인 역할들에 대한 대안을 제시해보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Korea, once known for its long history of enthnic homogeneity, now is becoming a multicultural nation fast. In this kind of fast changing multicultural society, what’s a church’s important role as a learning community for the immigrants? Where do immigrants learn how to adjust themselves to a new environment overcoming language and cultural barriers? What are the factors contributing to learning motivations for the adult immigratns in a multicultural society? Although Korean immigrants in the North America has a relatively long history, there are few studies about their cultural adjustment or acculturaltion to the new environment, especially on the adult learners who went to the states after they became adults. This study examined the first generation Korean immigrants in Los Angeles area to find out some helpful insights such as the motives of learning, the role of local churches, and expected pastoral leadership to apply for the adult immigrants in Korea. Of course, the two contries have more differences than similarities in their contexts. However, there are more diversity in ethnicities and races in greater Los Angeles than here in Korea. Korean churches might learn much from the case of Korean immigrants in the US to find out how to serve and help the immigrants in Korea more effectively.
