필립 야콥 슈페너의 “Collegium Pietatis” 에 대한 교회사적 의미 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 루터의 종교개혁운동의 영향력이 많이 식어져가던 17세기 침체에 빠진 독일 교회의 갱신을 위해서 헌신했던 필립 야콥 슈페너가 시작했던 소그룹모임 “콜레기움 피에타티스”에 대한 교회사적 중요성을 고찰한 논문이다. 슈페너가 1670년부터 프랑크푸르트에서 시작했던“콜레기움 피에타티스”는 교회사적으로 볼 때 몇 가지 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다. 슈페너의 소그룹 “콜레기움 피에타티스”는 마르틴 루터의 종교개혁운동의 지속적인 방편이 되었고, 경건주의 실천의 현장이었으며, 경건주의운동이 지속적으로 확산되어 나아갈 수 있었던 통로가 되었다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다. 뿐만 아니라 그의 소그룹모임은 교회갱신운동 확산에 중요한 통로가 되었으며, 분파운동이 아니라 교회의 본질을 회복하는 운동이었고, 나아가서 현대적 개념의 소그룹모임의 효시가 되었다는 점에서 교회사적으로 중요한 의미를 가진다. 본고에서 고찰한 것은 슈페너가 “콜레기움 피에타티스”를 시작한 것은 단순히 루터의 후예로서나 혹은 경건주의의 효시로서 단지 독일교회를 갱신해보려고 한 것만이 아니라 대그룹과 소그룹의 균형을 가졌던 초대교회(ecclesia primitiva)와 같이 건강한 교회의 모습으로 회복되어지는 것을 꿈꾸었기 때문이었다. 슈페너는 소그룹모임을 통해서 교회(ecclesia)를 새롭게 할 수 있다고 확신했다. 그는 소그룹 안에서 말씀과 기도로 서로를 세워 나아갈 때 결국은 교회가 본질적인 모습으로 회복되어질 수 있고, 날마다 갱신되어짐을 경험할 수 있다고 생각하였다. 슈페너에게는 분명한 소그룹목회철학이 있었다. 그는 “콜레기움 피에타티스”를 교회분리주의적인 모임이라고 비판을 받은 적도 있다. 그러나 그는 죽을 때 까지 “교회 안의 작은 교회”(ecclesiola in ecclesia)에 대한 비전을 포기하지 않았다. 소그룹을 통한 교회갱신이라는 원리를 끝까지 가지고 있었던 것이다. 슈페너는 오늘날 우리가 추구하는 “건강한 소그룹을 통해서 건강한 교회가 될 수 있다”는 생각을 이미 가지고 있었던 것이다. 이런 관점에서 슈페너의 소그룹 “콜레기움 피에타티스”는 현대적 개념을 가진 소그룹의 효시가 되는 것이다.

영문 초록

This article is a research paper on the significance of Philipp Jakob Spener’s “collegium pietatis” in the church history. Spener had committed himself to have been trying to renew the 17th century German Lutheran church while she was about to lose the influence of Martin Luther’s Reformation. One of our major concerns of this paper is to trace back to Spener’s small group which was initiated by him in his church in Frankfurt-am-Main in 1670. It was “collegium pietatis” which means “pious gathering.” There are several significant meanings in his small group “collegium pietatis” from the perspective of the church history. First, Spener’s “collegium pietatis” became a means of Martin Luther’s continual Reformation Movement. The enthusiasm for the Reformation was getting cooled down amid the 17th century especially in the Lutheran church. Secondly, Spener’s “collegium pietatis” became a good root for the spread of Pietism Movement. His small group “collegium pietatis” was a practical field of Pietism. Thirdly, his “collegium pietatis” was become a main passage for the church renewal movement in the Lutheran church of the 17th century. Spener contributed to renew the Lutheran church by way of reconfirmation of the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. Fourthly, “collegium pietatis” of Spener was not a sectarian movement but a fundamental church renewal movement toward a healthy church just like the primitive church Jesus Christ designed in Acts chapter 2. Spener did not try to build a new denomination but a healthy church through his “pious gathering” small groups. Fifthly, his small group “collegium pietatis” became the origin of our contemporary small group. His “collegium pietatis” was “a church within a church” (ecclesiola in ecclesia) and he had never forgotten this philosophy of his pastoral ministry until his last days. He might have had the vision that we could have a health church via a healthy small group. (*)
