혼합주의자 니골라당은 누구였는가(계 2:6, 15)?

국문 초록

이 본문의 목적은 계시록 2:6, 15에 나타난 신비로운 ‘니골라당’의 정체성을 연구하는 것이다. 이 목적에 도달하기 위해서 필자는 다음 4 단계를 따라 연구한다: (1) 니골라당에 대한 교부들의 증언, (2) 계시록 2장에서 니골라당과 연결된 인물들, (3) 계시록 2장에서 니골라당과 연결된 가르침과 행위들, (4) 니골라당과 초기 영지주의 사이의 연관성. 버가모교회의 발람을 따르는 자들과 두아디라교회에 이세벨을 따르는 자들은 유사한 교리와 행위를 공유하는 측면에서 니골라당과 일치하는 것으로 보인다. 이 논문의 결론은 계시록 2장의 니골라당은 소아시아 교회들과 연관 있는 초기 영지주의적 사상을 가진 율법폐기적 방종파들로서, 계시록의 독자들로 하여금 로마 황제의 박해를 피할 목적으로 혼합주의적 행위들에 참여하도록 부추긴 이들이었다. 이 연구는 세속 혼합주의에 빠지도록 압력을 가하는 물결을 직면한 한국교회에게 적절한 현대적 적용을 제공한다. 한국교회에게 궤변적 신학과 지나친 관용적 윤리가 결합되면 쉽게 교회를 무력화시켜서 그러한 혼합주의에 빠뜨린다는 사실을 상기시킨다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to investigate the identity of the mysterious 'Nicolaitans' in Revelation 2:6, 15. In order to reach this aim, the present researcher probes the following 4 steps: (1) the testimonies of the Church Fathers about the Nicolaitans, (2) the personas related to the Nicolaitans in Revelation 2, (3) the teachings and deeds in tandem with the Nicolaitans in Revelation 2, and finally (4) the relationship between the Nicolaitans and the incipient gnosticists. It seems that the followers of Balaam in Pergamum Church and of Jezebel in Thyatira Church were in consonant to the Nicolaitans in that they shared similar doctrines and works each other. The conclusion of this paper is that the Nicolaitans in Revelation 2 were the incipient gnostic and antinomian libertines involved in the churches in Asia Minor instigating John's readers to participate in syncretistic behaviors for the purpose of evading the Roman emperor's persecution. This study provides the Korean Church, which is facing a wave of pressure to engage in secular syncretism, with a relevant contemporary application. It accomplishes this by reminding the Church that combining a sophisticated theology and a tolerant ethic could easily debilitate the Church so that she falls into such syncretism.
