국문 초록

이 글에서는 1950년대 라디오방송 프로그램 ≪유모어 소극장≫을 중심으로 코미디 프로그램의 변천을 살피고, 라디오 코미디 드라마의 특징을 고찰하였다. ≪유모어 소극장≫은 토요일 오후 코미디 프로그램의 청취관습에 조력한 첫 코미디 드라마 프로그램이었다. 해방 후 본격적으로 시도된 라디오 코미디 드라마의 후신으로 1954년 8월부터 1958년 9월까지 토요일 오후 골든아워에 정규 편성되었다. 일상제도로서 방송의 관점에서 볼 때 ≪유모어 소극장≫은 양가적 면모를 드러내고 있었다. 문화생산의 제도적 측면에서는 1955년 국민명랑화운동으로 코미디 프로그램이 활성화되었으나, 선전성을 앞세운 정책물이 방송되는 등 규제가 심하였다. 열악한 방송 환경 속에서 잠재적 청취자가 적지 않은 가운데 라디오 방과 같은 문화공간이 출현함으로써 문화소비 방식의 변화를 촉발했다. ≪유모어 소극장≫에서 방송된 라디오 코미디 드라마는 창작 단막극 형식을 취하고 있었다. 첫째, 청각매체의 특성을 살려나가는 노력을 경주했다. 대사가 극적 방향과 성격을 주도하는 가운데 음악과 음향, 지문 등도 구체적인 청각적 영상을 확보하려 애쓰고 있었다. 둘째, 극적 장치를 통해 웃음을 유발하고 있었다. 언어유희에 치중했던 이전 시기에 비해 코믹한 내러티브 전략을 다양하게 구사하고 있었다. 셋째, 가족사건을 중심에 두면서도 점차 분화되는 양상을 띠었다. 가족사건의 이점들을 내장한 채 당대 사회문제와도 결합하고 있었다. 넷째, 웃음 이면에 가부장제 이데올로기의 강화에 조력하고 있어 다분히 문제적이었다. 사회적 효과 면에서 남녀평등의 시대를 선규정하는 전략은 오히려 가부장제 이데올로기의 정당성을 자연스럽게 강화하고 하고 있었다. 그것은 청취대중의 다양성보다 공감대의 보편성에 보다 주목했던 한계와 위험을 동시에 보여주는 것이었다.

영문 초록

This study aims at taking a look into the changes in comedy programs broadcast in the 1950s focusing on ≪Humor Small Theater≫ and exploring their characteristics. Starting with the changes in the trend of comedy programs, ≪Humor Small Theater≫ can be said to be the starting point leading to people’s widespread habit of listening to a comedy program during the weekend afternoons. As a successor to a radio comedy drama that began broadcasting in earnest after the independence, this program had been regularly broadcast in the golden hour of Saturday afternoon from August 1954. In particular, in addition to the story-telling style was newly broadcast in 1955, sparking the public interest and popularity in comedy programs. This affected not only other broadcasting stations but the cinema industry. After the program was abolished in October 1958 due to the controversy over the quality of its humors, however, story-telling style gags and variety show programs began to prevail. Next, if we look at ≪Humor Small Theater≫ from the perspective of broadcasting as an established system, it revealed an ambivalent aspect. Regarding the method of cultural consumption for this and other radio programs, it was notable that a new cultural space called a radio room emerged as there were quite large number of potential listeners amidst poor broadcasting conditions. For the institutional aspect of cultural production, comedy programs, driven by the National Be Cheerful Campaign in 1955, gained a momentum, but in reality, a propaganda programs were broadcast while regulations on the program production were still heavy. Lastly, radio comedy dramas broadcast at ≪Humor Small Theater≫ took the form of an one-act play focussing on narration, but due to the limited sources, ‘listening’ to the program could only be guessed by ‘reading’ relevant materials. In more detail, efforts were made to make the most of the characteristics of radio as an auditory media. Second, unexpected twists were used as a drama technique to elicit laughter. Third, the subject matter was mostly family affairs or incidents from the living community. Fourth, behind the comic side of the dramas was the endeavors to strengthen the patriarchal ideology, which was problematic. This revealed the limitations and dangers that these radio comedy dramas had by focusing more on universality than diversity of the listeners.
