국문 초록

19세기에 들어오면서 음향학은 크게 발전하였고, 음악의 청중도 크게 확장되면서 사회적 필요에 따라 새로운 악기와 연주 방식 등의 개선을 요구하였다. 음향학은 이러한 요구를 채우는 데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 음향학은 음악에 절대 음고의 제정과 음계와 정률을 합리화하는 데 토대가 되는 지식을 제공하였다. 특히 19세기 후반에 음향학의 비약적 발전과 더불어 음악을 과학화하려는 노력이 유럽을 중심으로 광범위하게 일어났고 이는 음악 교육에서도 음향학을 핵심적인 부분으로 삼으려는 노력을 낳았다. 헬름홀츠의 『음악 이론의 생리학적 기초로서 음의 감각』은 음악 이론을 위하여 집필된 음향학 책이었고 이 책은 엘리스에 의해 번역되어 영국에서 음악 교육을 위하여 사용되었다. 이러한 맥락에서 집필된 다수의 책들이 음악 학위를 받고자 하는 이들에게 상당한 수준의 음향학 지식을 교육하는 데 사용되었고 그들은 상당히 부담이 되는 음향학 시험을 통과해야 졸업을 할 수 있었다. 19세기 말에 이러한 제도는 음향학이 상당히 낙후되어 있었던 미국으로 전래되었고 그곳에서 잠과 밀러의 주도에 의해 실행되었다.

영문 초록

In the early nineteenth century, acoustics started to greatly develop, and the audiences of music also were expanded, requiring new musical instruments and new ways of practicing music to fulfill the social needs. Acoustics played an important role in meeting such needs by providing music with basic knowledge for the promulgations of the absolute pitch and for the rationalization of scales and temperaments. In particular, in the latter half of the nineteenth century, when acoustics developed splendidly, an effort to make music scientific mushroomed widely around Europe and produced practices to render acoustics an essential part of musical education. Germann acoustician Hermann von Helmholtz's Tonempfindungen was a book of acoustics written for musical theories. This treatise was translated into English by A. J. Ellis for musical education in Britain. Many books written for the same purpose were used in order to teach considerable level of acoustical knowledge to students, who could graduate after passing quite burdensome acoustical examinations. In the close of the century, this arrangement was transferred to America where acoustics had been stagnated considerably, and put into practice under Zahm's and Miller's initiative.
