국문 초록

중세에 처음 만들어진 '방랑 유태인 전설'은 서양 사회에 기독교가 지배종교로 군림하는 가운데 생겨난 이야기이다. 골고다로 향하는 예수를 홀대한 어느 유태인이 저주를 받아 최후의 심판까지 죽지 못하고 세상을 떠돌며 예수의 실재(實在)와 기독교의 정당성을 전파하는 운명을 살아야 한다는 내용이었다. 이 중세 이야기는 오랜 세월을 내려오면서 그 내용과 형식이 변하는 환골탈태의 과정을 거듭하여 특히 낭만주의 시대에 이르러서는 많은 작가들에 의해 다양한 문학 장르에 녹아들었다. 이 전설의 변조와 생산성을 이해하기 위해서는 그것에 관한 초기 문헌을 통해 배경 기원과 함께 주인공의 정체성을 확인하는 일이 필수적이며, 여기에 적합한 두 개의 문헌으로 13세기에 매튜 패리스와 16세기 두둘래우스의 작품이 있다. 이 두 작품에 나오는 이야기는 주인공의 이름이 다르다는 등의 차이점이 있긴 하지만 전체적으로 보면 동일한 것이 분명하다. 둘 모두가 예수의 수난, 주인공의 저주, 불멸과 방황이라는 똑 같은 요소의 내용을 갖고 있기 때문이다. 또한 이 이야기는 성경 이외에도 아랍, 그리스 그리고 유럽 등 다양한 전통과 문화의 요소를 포함하며 주인공은 카르타필루스, 아하스베루스, 요셉, 이작 라케뎀, 부타데우스 등 여러 개의 이름을 갖는데 이는 이 전설이 태생적으로 혼종성을 띠고 있다는 사실을 말해준다. 이렇게 생겨난 이 전설은 시간과 공간을 넘어 오늘날에도 여전히 새롭게 만들어지고 있으며 그것은 무엇보다 주인공에게 운명으로 주어진 불멸과 방랑 즉 기동성이라는 두 가지 능력이 주된 동인으로 작용하기 때문일 것이다.

영문 초록

The legend of the Wandering Jew was born in the Middle Ages. It is the story of a man who abused Jesus during the Passion and was sentenced by him to wander the world without dying until his return, that is to say, the Last Judgment. Since then, the story does not stop to renew and continues to branch out in some ways by the variety of frames and expressive forms. It was especially through the period of romanticism that the legend changed skin and was adapted to various literary genres. To understand its modulation and productivity, it seems essential to reveal the identity of the hero, the origin and context of the legend through the early writings on it. There are mainly two works the one by Matthew Paris in the 13th century, the other by a Dudulaeus in the 16th century. The story in each of the two documents differs from each other in some points, the hero's name for example, but the two stories are supposed to be the same because they are the same table: Passion of Christ, curse of the hero, immortality and wandering. Originally, this legend contains elements from the traditions and diverse cultures biblical, Arabic, Greek, European, etc., and its hero has several names such as Cartaphilus, Ahasuerus, Joseph, Isaac Laquedem, Bouttadeus, etc.. which reflects the native blend of this legend. So made, the legend remains so prolific in time and space and it is mostly thanks to two abilities given to the hero by destiny: immortality and mobility.
