일본 고령자의 사회적 지원 변화에 영향을 미치는 요인

국문 초록

본 연구는 사회적 지원의 변치(증가와 감소)에 영향을 미치는 요인을 검토하는 것을 목적으로, 일본 동경도 노인종합연구소에서 전국 60세 이상 재가 고령자를 대상으로 실시한 1차 조사(1987년)와 추적조사(1990년)의 자료를 분석하였다. 지원 감소에 관련된 요인은 감소군(높은 지원에서 낮은 지원으로 변화한 사람)과 높은 지원군(1차 조사와 추적조사 모두 지원이 높은 사람)간의 비교를 통해서 알아보았고, 지원 증가에 관련된 요인은 증가군(낮은 지원에서 높은 지원으로 변화한 사람)과 낮은 지원군(1차 조사와 추적조사 모두 지원이 낮은 사람)과의 비교를 통해 검토하였다. 사회적 지원은 고령자가 배우자, 자녀, 친척ㆍ친구ㆍ이웃로부터 받는 정서적 지원과 수단적 지원을 통해 파악하였다. 고령자의 신체적 기능, 사회적 관계망(배우자의 유무, 자녀와의 동거 유무, 친구의 유무, 소속된 그룹의 유무), 경제적 만족도의 3가지 지원이 사회적 지원 변화에 미치는 영향을 검토하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 신체적 기능이 악화된 경우 배우자로부터 받는 수단적 지원이 감소하는 확률이 높아, 고령자가 신체 기능이 나빠져 수단적 지원을 필요로 하는 상황이 되어도 배우자로부터 수단적 지원을 기대하기 어렵다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 2) 자녀와 동거하게 된 고령자는 자녀로부터의 정서적 지원 감소가 적고, 자녀와 별거하게 된 경우에는 수단적 지원이 증가하기 어려운 것으로 나타나, 자녀의 지원을 얻기 위해 자녀와의 동거가 중요한 요인임이 확인되었다. 3) 친한 친구가 지속적으로 없는 고령자는 지속적으로 친구가 있는 고령자에 비해 자녀의 정서적 지원이 증가하였다. 이는 친구로부터 정서적인 지원을 받지 못하는 경우 자녀가 정서적인 지원은 대체해주는 것을 나타내는 결과로 해석할 수 있으며 계층적 보완모델을 지지하는 것이다. 4) 경제적으로 어려운 상태가 계속된 경우, 자녀나 친척ㆍ친구ㆍ이웃이 제공해주는 수단적 지원이 감소하는 경향이 나타나, 경제적 자원과 사회적 지원과의 관령성이 확인되었다. 향후 한국에서 종단연구를 통한 사회적 지원 변화에 관련된 요인을 검토하여 본 연구 결과와의 비교 검토가 필요할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine factors related to changes in social support among Japanese elderly. We analyzed longitudinal data from a national representative sample of person aged 60+ collected at two time points(1987,1990). Dependent variables were measured from both emotional and instrumental support received by spouse, child, and relatives/friends/neighbors. Characteristics of persons whose support decreased during follow-up period were examined with comparison to persons who kept their support high. Correlates of the increased (changed from lower support to higher support) were analyzed with reference to the lower support group (kept lower support). Possible predictors were changes in physical functioning, social networks and financial satisfaction of the elderly The main results were as follows. 1) Physical functioning was associated to the instrumental support decrease. Elderly who lost physical function during the follow-up interval decreased in instrumental support receiving from spouse. 2) People started living together with child during follow-up showed increased in emotional support, while elderly who became living separately with child were less likely to increase in instrumental support form child which implicating the importance of cohabitating with child to preserve child support. 3) Child's emotional support was likely to increasing within elderly who had not close friend continuously. 4) Persons who were under lower financial satisfaction revealed more decrease in child and relatives/friends/neighbors support. These findings suggest that the support changes were fairly influenced by the elderly's resources, such as physical health, social networks and financial satisfaction.
