서예과의 현실인식과 한국서예 발전을 위한 제언

국문 초록

1989년 세계최초로 설립된 원광대학교 서예과가 학교측으로부터 폐과통지를 받았다. 이에 그 과정에서 드러난 MB정권의 몰입식 영어교육 천명에 따른 문화교육 침체와 천편일률적인 대학구조조정, 원광대 서예과의 적절하지 못한 대응 등을 객관적으로 살펴보았다. 소잃고 외양간 고치는 격이 아닐 수 없으나, 남아있는 경기대·대전대 서예과의 위기탈출에 도움이 되기를 바라는 마음으로 재학생들을 대상으로 하는 설문조사를 실시하였다. 서예과는 사설 학원이 아니다. 따라서 서예과만의 정체성을 지녀야 하며, 소비자 즉 재학생들이 원하는 교육이 무엇인지를 파악하여, 정통 서예문화와 소통할 수 있는 방향성을 제시해야만 한다. 원광대 서예과 설립 이후 한국서예계에는 수많은 서예관련 자료들이 생산되었다. 이제는 그 자료들을 면밀하게 검토하여 단계별, 내용별로 보다 체계적이고 깊이 있는 자료의 정비가 필요한 시점이다. 범서단과의 연대가 필요하다. 서예과의 교육이 변하더라도 그것이 서단과 연계되어 확장될 수 없다면 그것 또한 무의미한 일이 되고 말 것이다.

영문 초록

Recently the Wonkwang University has determined to shut down its department of calligraphy, the first of its kind in the world established in 1989. In accordance with this event, the author has conducted an objective investigation into the consequences of MB administration's intensive English immersion education, such as slump of cultural education, monotonous college restructure, and inadequate handling of the situation by the Wonkwang University calligraphy department. It perhaps is too late, but in an attempt to help the crisis newly faced by the calligraphy department of Kyonggi University and Daejeon University, a survey was carried out among the students of the calligraphy course. The department of calligraphy is not a private educational institute. Therefore it needs its very own identity, and needs to figure out exactly what its consumers - i.e. the students - want from their education and be able to provide a direction for them to interact with the traditional culture of calligraphy. Since the establishment of the calligraphy department in Wonkwang University, the Korean calligraphy society has seen a numerous calligraphy related documents being produced. Now it is time to examine these documents in depth in order to manage them in a more systematic fashion, sorted by their level and contents. The calligraphy department needs to confederate with the entire calligraphy community first of all. Even if the education system changes, if it cannot grow by being associated with the scriptures, the whole effort would be meaningless in the end.
