국문 초록

본고는 古今을 막론하고 書聖으로 推仰받는 王羲之 서예에 대한 歷代 書家들의 비평을 고찰한 글이다. 역대 서가들의 비평을 종합하여 왕희지가 書聖으로 추앙받는 까닭과, 그의 서예가 후대 서가들에게 어떠한 평가를 받고 어떠한 영향을 미치는지, 한편 그의 서예에서 어떠한 점을 비판적으로 계승했는지를 고찰하였다. 왕희지는 작가의 뜻이 붓보다 앞서야 한다는 ‘意在筆前’ 사상, 글씨의 평정하고 안온함을 귀히 여기는 ‘中和美’, 자연을 숭상하는 마음과 자유분방한 개성을 표출하는 ‘無爲自然’ 사상을 중시하였다. 이런 인식은 그의 서예미학 전반에 내재되어 있다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 서예미학을 기반으로 晉 · 漢 이래로 내려오는 篆書와 隸書의 서로 다른 筆法을 모두 그의 草書와 楷書에 융해시켜 자기만의 창작세계를 개척했다. 그리하여 왕희지는 중국서예사에서 서예의 전범 · 표준 · 핵심을 이룬 書聖으로 추앙받았고, 서예를 集大成한 인물로 평가되었다. 왕희지의 작품은 서법이 정교하고 치밀하여 절묘한 경지에 도달했으며, 고금을 통틀어 비할 데가 없다는 평을 받았다. 특히 <蘭亭敍>는 천재적 창조성이 가장 돋보이는 작품으로 손꼽힌다. <蘭亭敍> 외에도 <樂毅論>, <黃庭經>, <十七帖> 등의 작품도 높은 품격을 지닌 것으로 평가된다. 그의 서예는 경전과도 같은 지침서로 계승되었으며, 그 書格은 법칙이 엄격한 가운데서도 心劃이 자유롭고 기운이 생동하며 변화가 무쌍한 것으로 평가되었다. 하지만 모든 서가들이 왕희지를 맹목적으로 추존하지는 않았다. 일부는 왕희지 글씨의 연미함과 속됨을 비판하였으며, 일부는 그의 아들인 王獻之와 비교하여 왕헌지의 글씨가 더 힘이 있고 굳세다고 평하기도 하였다. 이를 보면 일각에서는 왕희지를 警戒的 입장에서 비평적으로 계승하였다는 점도 인식할 수 있다. 이상과 같이 역대 서가들의 왕희지 비평을 통해 그의 서예미학과 창작세계의 심오함을 거듭 인식할 수 있었으며, 서예사적으로도 그의 존재가치를 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 왕희지 서예에 대한 역대 서가들의 다양한 비평관점을 이해하였으며, 왕희지를 왜 書聖으로 존숭하였는지 그 이유를 이해하는 계기를 마련하였다.

영문 초록

This thesis is a consideration of criticism on WangHeeJi (王羲之), the saint of calligraphy respected across the ages, by calligraphers of all time. By gathering up their criticism, examination of the reason why WangHeeJi was respected as the saint of calligraphy, and appraisal of his works was done. Also, what was avoided in his calligraphy was considered. WangHeeJi lay emphasis on the idea of EuiJaePilJeon (意在筆前, writer's meaning before the brush), JungHwaMi (中和美, equanimousness and peacefulness of characters), and MuWiJaYeon (無爲自然, worshiping the nature and expressing freewheeling personality). Such awareness is inherent in his general calligraphy aesthetics. Based on the calligraphy aesthetics, WangHeeJi has pioneered his unique world of creation by fusioning the different style of penmanship between JeonSeo (篆書) and YeSeo (隸書) into his ChoSeo (草書) and HaeSeo (楷書). Therefore, WangHeeJi was respected as the saint of calligraphy for forming the classic · standard · core of calligraphy in the history of Chinese calligraphy, and appreciated as the person who compiled calligraphy. His penmanship is exquisite and his works are praised to have reached the level of excellency. His works are incomparable throughout the past and present. Among his works, (蘭亭序) is considered as the creation of a genius. Other works like (樂毅論), (黃庭經), (十七帖) are also rated highly. However, not all calligraphers have followed WangHeeJi unconditionally. Some criticized his tender art and earthliness of his works, and some compared him to WangHeonJi (王獻之), and praised the latter's work for stronger and firm works. This tells that people have criticized WangHeeJi in the stance of avoidance. Calligraphers that represent the Chosun Dynasty like WonGyo LeeGwangSa (圓嶠 李匡師), BaekHa YoonSoon (白下 尹淳), OkDong YiSeo (玉同 李漵) have also appreciated and accepted the works of WangHeeJi as the paragon of calligraphy. As seen above, not only in China, but also among the scholars of calligraphy in Chosun, calligraphy of WangHeeJi has been inherited as the SaBeob (師法) and is considered as the saint of calligraphy in the history of calligraphy. Like so, by analyzing the criticism on WangHeeJi by the calligraphers of all time, his art of calligraphy, profoundity of his world of creation and the value of WangHeeJi in the history of calligraphy was ascertained. In addition, calligraphers of all time's recognition of calligraphy and viewpoint of criticism was acknowledged.
