국문 초록

일본의 대표적 맑스주의자인 堺利彦의 『社會主義學說の大要』는 1922년 발행된 이래 수 천부가 발행되는 대중적 성공을 거두었다. 民衆社의 일원이었던 鄭栢은 『社會主義學說の大要』를 번역하여, 1923년 10월부터 1924년 3월까지 5회에 걸쳐 「社會主義學說大要」라는 제목으로 『開闢』에 연재하였다. 이는 출판물의 간행을 통한 맑스주의 선전이라는 민중사의 프로젝트의 하나로 진행된 것이다. 『開闢』에 연재된 「社會主義學說大要」는 기본적으로 『社會主義學說の大要』를 매우 충실하게 번역하고 있다. 그리고 번역자의 '註'를 통해 내용의 이해를 돕고자 하였고, 원저에 삭제된 부분을 문맥에 맞게 복원하기도 하였다. 또한 맑스주의 원전 부분의 번역은 단순한 重譯이 아니라, 다른 일역본도 참조하여 번역했다는 점이 특징적이다. 『開闢』에 연재되었던 「社會主義學說大要」는 1925년 5월 개벽사출판부에서 『社會主義學說大要』라는 단행본으로 출판되었다. 출판 과정에서 검열로 인해 3곳이 삭제되었는데, 삭제된 내용은 모두 자본주의의 필연적인 붕괴와 사회주의의 필연적인 도래를 주장하는 부분이다. 『社會主義學說大要』의 내용 가운데 가장 주목되는 것은 '進化'를 변화와 발전이라는 차원에서 이해하고, 이를 인간사회에 적용하여 자본주의 체제도 결국은 '필연적'으로 붕괴한다고 설명한 점이다. 또한 '사회주의의 필연성'과 함께 '계급투쟁'을 '필연적' 역사진화의 동력으로 강조한 점도 주목된다. '계급투쟁'에 대한 강조가 정백이 『社會主義學說の大要』를 번역한 이유이다. 『社會主義學說大要』의 번역은 '사회주의의 필연성'을 강조하던 이전의 번역단계에서 '계급투쟁'을 통한 사회주의로의 혁명적 이행을 강조하는 단계로의 전환을 잘 보여주고 있다. 이는 민중사 관계자들이 물산장려논쟁 과정에서 전개했던 맑스주의 혁명론에 대한 인식의 연장선에 위치하는 것이자, 1924년 이후 공산주의 그룹들의 전위당 조직을 위한 활동 및 논쟁과 맞물린다는 점에서 의미 있는 것이다. 일관된 시각과 체제를 갖고 맑스주의를 소개하고 있다는 평가를 받던 『社會主義學說の大要』를 번역 출판했다는 것은 맑스주의를 대중적으로 선전하려 했다는 점에서 주목되는 것이다. 그리고 47개월 동안 모두 5판이 발행된 것에서 알 수 있듯 『社會主義學說大要』에 대한 식민지 조선 대중들의 반응도 매우 뜨거웠다. 이러한 대중적 성공은 이 책이 대중들의 사회주의에 대한 관심을 적극적으로 해소시켰기 때문에 가능한 것이었다. 민중사가 맑스주의를 선전할 목적으로 번역했던 『社會主義學說大要』는 천도교가 운영하던 개벽사의 출판부에서 발행되었다. 개벽사는 자신들이 발행하던 『開闢』ㆍ『彗星』ㆍ『別乾坤』의 54%에 『社會主義學說大要』의 광고를 게재하였는데, 이러한 빈도는 개벽사가 발행한 잡지에 게재된 책들 가운데 최고 수준이다. 또한 18종이나 되는 광고문을 통해 『社會主義學說大要』를 홍보하였다. 그러나 개벽사가 광고에서 강조한 점은 급변하는 세계정세 속에서 행세하기 위한 하나의 '처세상식'인 사회주의의 체계를 『社會主義學說大要』가 누구나 쉽게 알 수 있도록 해 준다는 것이었다.

영문 초록

The book, Shakaishugi Gakusetsu no Taiyō(『社會主義學說の大要』), written in 1922 by Sakai Toshihiko who is a well-known Japanese Marxist, was very popular at the time. Jeong Baek, a member of Minjoongsa, translated the book into Korean and divided the book into 5 chapters, which were published serially under the collective title, "The Outline of Socialism Theory"(「社會主義學說大要」), in Gaebyeok(『開闢』) from October 1923 to March 1924. This was for the purpose of propagating Marxism by publications. In "The Outline of Socialism Theory" the author not only tried to translate exactly but also tried to make it easy to understand by adding notes. He even recovered some missing elements from the context. Especially, he referred to other books as well when he translated Marxist texts in the book. "The Outline of Socialism Theory" was published as a book in May 1925. Some paragraphs were removed by the censor, which were about the inevitable collapse of capitalism and its replacement by socialism. What is noteworthy in the book is that evolution is understood in terms of change and development, and thus capitalism is claimed to be brought to an end. In addition, class struggle as well as the necessity of socialism is focused on as the engine of the evolution of history. The emphasis for the class struggle is the reason why he translated the book. The translation of The Outline of Socialism Theory(『社會主義學說大要』) shows that while the necessity of socialism had been emphasized before the publication of the book, the transition into socialism by class struggle was emphasized at the time of the publication. It is closely related to the perspective of Marxist revolution by the members of Minjoongsa during the Debate of the Encouragement of Korean Products, and the activity and discussion for the organization of the vanguard party by the communist groups since 1924. The publication of the book was for the purpose of propaganda of Marxism, and the book was so popular that it was published in five editions for forty seven months. The book satisfied the public demand for knowledge of socialism successfully, which was the reason of the popularity. The department of publication of Gaebyeok published the book and advertised it through it's magazines - Gaebyeok, Hyeseong(『彗星』), Byeolgeongon(『別乾坤』). It is noteworthy that the level of advertising was highest. The department emphasized in the advertisement that people could understand the socialism, a philosophy of living in the face of the rapidly changing international situation.
