존 키츠와 언어의 정치학

국문 초록

낭만주의 시인 존 키츠의 시문학에 있어 언어적인 문제는 단순히 주변장치에 불과한 것이 아니라 서로 깊은 상관관계가 있음을 보여준다. 어느 특정 시기에 우세한 정치적, 사회적, 환경적인 상황은 시인이 사용하는 언어에 결정적인 영향을 미친다는 논리에 따라, 지성적인 시기라고 정의되던 시대에 살았던 그는 문학적인 취향이나 특성, 문화에 걸친 당대의 국가적인 논의가 시의 언어와 정치적으로 깊은 연관이 있다는 것을 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 우선, 그가 속해 있던 영국 낭만주의 시대는 농경기에서 현대 산업 국가로 급격히 변화해가는 시련을 겪어야 했던 격변의 시기였다. 경제적, 사회적으로 심각한 변화는 정치적인 변화를 필사적으로 요구하는 시기이기도 했다. 그리고 이러한 시대정신과 더불어 언어와 문화를 그들 사이에 서로 연계된 수단으로 해석했으며 사회적, 정치적 개혁은 언어적 개혁에 영향을 미친다고 생각한 낭만주의 작가들은 혁명이라는 관념에 몰두했다. 워즈워스와 콜리지가 매일 같이 통교한 결과, 민주주의의 정치학에 걸맞는 혁명적인 시의 이론과 실제인 ≪서정민요 시집≫을 만들어냈다. 그리고 이러한 상황 속에서 키츠는 언어적으로 훈련을 받은 친구들인 헌트, 워즈워스, 해즐릿 등과 교우하며 언어 감각을 키웠으며, 그의 시작품에 지대한 영향을 미친 언어에 관한 두 권의 책에 몰두했다. 하나는 프랑스 언어 철학자인 꽁디약의 책으로, 키츠는 그것을 통해 풍부한 관념과 이미지를 제공받았고, 또 하나는 베일리의 사전으로, 그것을 통해 키츠는 시의 담론 속에 깃든 언어적인 미묘한 선택의 문제에 대한 감식력을 키웠다. 이처럼 키츠를 둘러싼 모든 정치적, 사회적, 문학적 상황들과 그 자신의 교우관계, 독서, 그리고 상상력은 그에게 깊은 영향을 주어 그로 하여금 시를 통해 당대로서는 "낯선 언어", 즉 새로운 언어를 창조하도록 했고 의미 있는 언어를 풍부히 구사하도록 했다. 그러므로 키츠가 다채로운 문화적인 매개체를 통해 철학적인 사고를 했으며, 또한 그를 통해 활력있고 역설적인 특성을 지닌 언어를 구사하는 시를 쓸 수 있었던 것은 그 스스로가 몰두한 언어 자체에 대한 광범위한 사색과 논의로부터 나온 것이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Do we see linguistic works as merely peripheral or deep-related to Romantic literature or John Keats? I think language prevailing at any particular period will have a decisive influence on the attitude towards and the use of the language of that period. Keats who lived in an age defined intellectually, shows it politically by its attitudes towards language. For all sides in a national debate over literary taste, propriety and cultural agency at that time acknowledged that a poem's language was as politically significant as its message. The possibility that political structures were vulnerable to changes in literary discourse resisted the innovations in poetic diction. Romantic Period was a turbulent period, during which England experienced the ordeal of change from a primarily agricultural society to a modern industrial nation. This change occurred in a context of the Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution and then French Revolution. It was the very time when profound economic and social changes were creating a desperate need for corresponding changes in political arrangement. With the spirit of the age, the imagination of Romantic writers was preoccupied with the fact and idea of revolution. Wordsworth and Coleridge in excited daily communion, set out to revolutionize, on grounds analogous to the social politics of democracy, the theory and practice of poetry. The product of these discussions was the Lyrical Ballads. Keats, in these situations, had linguistically-trained friends, Hunt, Wordsworth, and Hazlitt, and reading of two authors of primary philological texts which influenced his work so much. The first was French linguistic philosopher, Etienne Bonnot de Condillac, whose work, I believe, provided Keats with a rich storehouse of ideas and images. The second was Nathaniel Bailey, a copy of whose The New Universal Etymological English Dictionary, was in Keats' possession. Bailey's dictionary would have powerfully confirmed the poet's views on the merits of native versus classical traditions within poetic discourse. All these influential materials were involved with the choices to be made regarding language through Keats's "language strange" and the project to restore meaningful diction to poetry. Therefore, I can say, Keats's engagement with philological thought and the new, vital and paradoxical features of his writing take good forms as they emerge out of wide-ranging debates over the nature of language itself.
