쿠퍼의 『개척자들』에 나타난 생태관리와 생태보존 연구

국문 초록

지금까지의 미국생태문학연구에는 정전에 속한 소설이 별로 다루어지지 않았다. 1996년 쿠퍼 학회가 구성된 이후에, 생태비평의 이러한 무관심에 대한 지적과 반성이 일어나고, 자연 뿐만 아니라 인간 삶의 현실적인 양상을 적극적으로 담아내려는 경향이 서서히 나타나게 되었다. 이러한 태도 변화는 정전소설에 대한 생태비평적 여지를 마련하여 주었다. 생태비평의 근간을 이루는 것에는 생태관리(ecoconservation)와 생태보존(ecopreservation)이 있다. 생태관리는 자연자원이 무한하지 않기 때문에 산업화에 필요하고 삶을 윤택하게 만들어주는 자원을 보존하고 관리하지 않으면 언젠가는 고갈될 것이라는 관점이다. 이에 반해 생태보존은 자연이 그 자체로 존재가치를 지니며 인간은 자연의 일부에 불과하다는 관점이다. 미국에서 가장 먼저 환경 및 생태의식을 작품에 본격적으로 구현한 사람은 19세기 초반에 활동한 쿠퍼(James Fenimore Cooper)이다. 18세기 말 미국에서 산업화가 급속도로 진행되면서 파생된 자연과 문명의 갈등을 묘사하고 있는 쿠퍼의 작품들은 생태비평의 관점에 많이 부합된다. 생태관리와 생태보존 사이의 갈등과 같은 환경관련 이슈들이 특히 '가죽양말 이야기'(Leatherstocking Tales)시리즈의 첫 작품인 『개척자들』(The Pioneers)에는 잘 묘사되어 있다. 이는 미국문학에서 그가 앞서 이룩한 여러 가지 선구자적 업적에 또 한가지 업적이 추가될 수 있음을 입증해 준다. 즉 쿠퍼가 생태학적 의식을 보여준 최초의 미국 소설가라는 바이다.

영문 초록

The concept of ecoconservation has led to the awareness that natural resources are not limitless so they could be exhausted with reckless exploitation. The concept of ecopreservation has helped with the awareness that American wilderness and sublime landscapes which distinguish America from Europe are the sources of national pride and identity. American enviromental philosopher George Perkins Marsh has been credited as the pioneer who first theorized the importance of ecoconservation and ecopreservation in the mid-19th century. However, it was in fact the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper, who for the first time embodied the concepts of ecoconservation and ecopreservation into his work. The ecocritical approach of The Pioneers lies less in its premise of ecocentric perspectives than its narrative of conflicts among different viewpoints of man-nature relations: Judge Temple's vision of ecoconservation, Natty Bumppo's ecopreservation, and frontier town people's utilitarianism. Through the clashes among these different viewpoints of nature in the American frontier, Cooper not only questions the established Western anthropocentric approach to nature, demonstrating the awareness of the importance of ecoconservation and ecopreservation, but also he farther leads American novelists to ponder the environment and ecological thought. He is the first pioneer and frontier showing environment and ecological consciousness in the American novelists.
