국문 초록

이 글은 최근 대규모 유통기업들의 상권 침투에 대한 중소상인들의 집단적 대응 과정을 살펴봄으로써 중소상인의 집합행동의 특성과 의미를 계급형성론의 관점에서 분석하려는 시도이다. 현대 한국 사회에서 중소상인은 양적 성장을 거듭해 왔지만, 최근 대형마트와 기업형 슈퍼마켓을 통한 대기업의 시장 진출로 생존의 위기에 직면했다. 그 대응책으로 이들은 자신들의 인식과 태도를 바꾸고 사회운동세력과 연대해서 전국적 규모의 조직을 결성했다. 이러한 의식 전환과 조직 결성을 바탕으로 이들은 물리적 대응, 담론 형성, 입법 투쟁을 병행하며 자신들의 집단적 권익을 옹호하고자 했다. 이 같은 이들의 집합행동은 쁘띠부르주아지로서의 중소상인의 가능성과 한계를 함께 보여준다. 즉 사회불안과 생존위기가 체제 순응적이던 이들을 집합행동으로 내몰았지만, 이들의 대응은 기득권 수호 차원을 크게 넘어서지 못하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper intends to examine the collective responses of small shopkeepers to market invasion of massive retail companies and analyze the characteristics and meanings of small shopkeepers' collective action from the perspective of class formation. In modern Korea, small shopkeepers have grown continuously, but recently they were faced with the crisis of survival due to the retail market invasion of large discount stores and super super-markets. In response to it, they changed their perceptions and behaviors and built nationwide organizations as well as local interest groups in collaboration with social movement groups. On the basis of conversion of consciousness and organization formation, they tried to defend their collective interests by means of various socio-political activities such as physical conflicts, discourse competitions and lawmaking activities etc. These activities show us possibilities and limits of small shopkeepers as petit bourgeoisie. Namely, social unrest and the crisis of survival drove them to the situation of collective activities, but they remained the level of defense of their vested interests.
