국문 초록

움베르토 에코의 『장미의 이름』을 원작으로 한 장-자크 아노 감독의 영화 「장미의 이름」은 14세기 중세 시대의 수도원 문화가 지녔던 상징성을 두텁게 묘사한 작품 중에서 단연코 으뜸이다. 단 한 송이의 장미꽃도 제시하지 않고서도 프란체스코 수도사들이 제각기 전유한 장미의 상징적 의미를 포착하고 중세 시대의 상징 문화의 두터운 층위를 영화미학적으로 재현해내는 솜씨가 그야말로 일품이다. 특히 중세 시대의 다양한 공간에 대한 재조명, 다양한 인간에 대한 재발견, 다양한 사랑에 대한 재구성 측면에서 영화가 재현해낸 다양한 중세의 문화는 암흑기 중세 담론을 넘어 새로운 중세를 탐사하는 데 유익한 길라잡이의 역할을 해주고 있다고 높이 평가받을 만하다. 이처럼 영화가 재현한 중세의 이미지를 따라가 본 결과, 빛과 어둠이 절묘하게 또는 불편하게 어우러져 중세 기독교 문화를 다양하게 변주시켰다는 흥미로운 사실을 새롭게 인식하게 되었다. 이런 점에서 역사영화 「장미의 이름」은 새로운 중세적 과거를 독특한 방식으로 재현하는 데 성공함으로써 화면 위에 쓴 중세사 연구로서의 의미가 충분하다고 판단될 뿐만 아니라, 동시에 중세의 마리아에 관한 문화사적 연구를 위한 중요한 모티프까지 제공해 주고 있다는 점에서 사학사적인 검토가 될만한 충분한 가치가 있다고 평가된다.

영문 초록

The historical film The Name of the Rose was made in 1986 by the famous French filmdirector Jean-Jaque Annaud on the base of the outstanding historical novel written by the famous Umberto Eco, who had successfully described the cultural landscapes of the monastery in the 14th century of the European Middle Age through the filmic symbols. Although he did not show even one leaf of the rose, he could dramatically succeed in representing the deep status of the symbolic culture in the Middle Age in which the monks in those times could appropriate the meaning of the rose respectively. To put it birefly, this film can be highly appreciated especially in the three main aspects, the reillumination of the different spaces, the rediscovery of the human beings, the reconstruction of the vaious loves in the Middle Age. in this meaning the film can give a new light on the way of finding out a new Middle Age beyond the dark Middle Age. in the new cultural landscapes which were repesented in the film, we can find out the new interesting fact that the light and the darkness intertwisted each other and changed Christian cultures of the Middle Age especially relating to the Maria cult. So it can be valuable to consider that the historical film can sucessfully represent the new histories of the Middle Age on the screen and give the important motif for the new cultural research into the Middle Age. Therefore this historical film deserves to be reappraised historiogaphically in the cultural history of the Maria cult in the Middle Age.
