정도전의 箕子 중심의 역사관과 급진적 문명론

국문 초록

정도전의 유학적 문제의식을 급진적으로 실천하려고 하였다. 이색이 권도의 입장에서 시세적 변용을 지향하였다면, 정도전은 성리학의 원리 원칙을 지향하였다. 그럼으로써 유학적 문제의식과 주자의 역사론 계승을 분명하게 제시한 도학적 춘추론을 제시할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 입장에서 정도전은 기자 중심의 역사관을 전개하였다. 그는 이색과 달리 단군의 역사적 의미를 축소하는 한편, 조선이라는 국호를 기자의 문명교화와 관련하여 해석하였다. 이에 신국가 조선의 문화적 정체성과 과제는 문명교화의 실천이 될 수 있었다. 그는 이를 확장하여 『朱子家禮』와 『周禮』를 중심으로 하는 제도적 개혁을 지향하는 한편, 불교의 교리를 비판하였다. 이것은 조선의 문화를 보편적 기준에 맞추면서도 국가적 지향을 기자 전통의 계승과 문명교화의 실천으로 잡아나가고자 한 것이다. 이와 같은 정도전의 역사관과 문화의식은 당시의 문화적 수준을 낙관적으로 보고 점진적인 변화를 추구하였던 이색과는 달리, 전면적인 풍속의 개혁 없이는 유학적 가치 실현을 이룰 수 없다고 보는 것이었다. 그러나, 이색과 정도전 모두가 문명교화를 최종적 목적으로 보고 있다는 점에서 생각하면, 이들의 차이점은 현실인식에서 비롯된 실천방안의 차이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

A Neo-Confucian scholar-official, Jeong Dojeon took a radical position in applying Confucian principles to historical analysis and social reform of Goryeo dynasty. Contrary to Lee Saek's situational application of Tao in his understanding of history, Jeong advocated the theory of legitimacy. Like Zhu Xi's analysis of Spring and Autumn Annals, he presented Gija-centered analysis of national history focusing on whether the Confucian concept of "the Mind of Tao" is inherited between dynasties. In addition to criticizing Lee's emphasis on Dangun as a historical founder, Jeong defined newly established Joseon as the successor of Gija who symbolized the introduction of Chinese civilization. Based on this idea of civilization and national history, Jeong Dojeon tried to set the practicing of civilization not only as the means by which Joseon could establish its cultural identity, but also as the end itself that the new Neo-Confucian nation must achieve. For this purpose, Jeong rejected Buddhist doctrines and argued for the adoption of Rite of Zhou as the principle of political reform. These were the attempts he made to develop Joseon as a civilized nation that inherited the tradition of Gija as well as to adjust its culture according to the universal criteria. Whereas Lee Saek took a gradualist attitude toward the reform of Goryeo society, Jeong thought the realization of Confucian ideals was impossible without the radical reform of existing customs. However, Lee and Jeong's discrepancy was nothing more than methodological divergence, because both considered civilization as the ultimate goal.
