국문 초록

본고는 막스 배버 저작들이 다양한 주제들과 그에 따른 산만한 편린적 저작들만 포함하고 있다는 일반적 평가에 반하여, 그의 저작들은 이론적 통일성이라는 시각에서 하나의 일관된 지향점이 있다는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 세계문명에 대한 보편사적, 발달사의 해석을 향한 베버 자신의 열망을 숙고해보면 그 안에 보이지 않는 통일성을 찾을 수 있기 때문이다. 그는 궁극적으로 변화의 진보적 계기뿐만 아니라 경제와 사회 제도간의 보편적 관계를 고려하는 설득력 있는 통일적 이론을 그 자신의 역사적 비전 아래서 만들어내길 열망했다는 점을 강조하고자 한다. 이러한 목적에서 본고는 먼저, 베버가 하나의 새로운 학문적 영역 즉 '역사적 사회과학'을 확립하려 한 내용을 검토한다. 이어서 그 사회과학은 기본적으로 그의 역사학적 전망과 방법론 및 그 자신의 독특한 역사철학에 근거했다는 점을 규명한다. 마지막으로 베버의 학문적 업적이 결국은 당대에 있어 자리 잡아 가고 있던 합리적 관료주의의 지배라는 근대 사회의 새로운 성격을 분석하고 규명하는데 집중되어 있었다는 점을 밝힌다. 이와 같은 관찰을 통해, 베버가 '사회학자', '사회과학자'로 흔히 소개되고 있지만, 그의 학문적 비전은 역사 세계에 대한 자신의 독특한 역사철학적 관점에서 비롯했고, 그 사회과학의 방법론은 기본적으로 역사적 접근방법에 기초하였으며, 이러한 역사적 접근방법은 20세기 사회과학적 역사학의 이론적 근거를 마련하는데 결정적 기여를 하였다는 점을 밝힌다.

영문 초록

This article attempts to clarify that there is a theoretical unity in Max Weber's works, in contrast to the general evaluations of his works as denoting too diverse themes and fragmental subjects. One can find an unseen unity in Weber's diverse works, when one consider his aspiration for a universal and developmental analysis of world civilizations. It should be noted that he aspired to develop a unifying theory that is able to explain the general relationship between economic and social institutions as well as the eventual motives for historical progress. With these objects, it first explores Weber's endeavor for an establishment of a new field of study, 'historical social science.' Then it maintains that his new social science was based essentially on his historical perspectives and methodology as well as his own philosophy of history. Lastly, it clarifies that his scientific achievements were focused on the analysis and interpretation of a new characteristic of modern society that is ultimately susceptible to the dominance of rationalistic bureaucracy that was taking shape in his age. Through the above observations, it is to emphasize three following points. Although Weber has been frequently introduced as 'sociologist,' or 'social scientist,' (1) his scientific vision derived from his own pessimistic philosophy of history over the historical world, (2) his methodology of social science was based essentially on a historical approach, and (3) this methodology of historical approach has contributed decisively to the enrichment of the theoretical foundation for various social scientific histories in the 20th century.
