국문 초록

'죽음'은 비스와바 쉼보르스카(1923~2012) 시에서 일관되게 발견되는 모티브이다. 쉼보르스카는 죽음을 삶과의 단절로 보지 않고, 생의 한 가운데에서 죽음의 의미를 부단히 성찰했다. 초기작에서부터 존재의 유한성을 겸허하게 받아들였던 시인은 생성과 소멸이라는 이분법적인 생사관(生死觀)을 과감히 거부하면서 죽음을 삶의 한 과정으로 담담하고, 초연하게 받아들였다. 개체의 실존적 가치를 누구보다 소중히 여겼던 쉼보르스카는 '역사'라는 거대한 흐름 속에서 익명으로 버림받고, 희생을 강요당한 개개인의 존재론적 위기에도 각별한 관심을 기울였다. 또한 길가에 버려진 딱정벌레의 주검조차도 함부로 지나치지 않으면서 주변의 작은 생명체 하나하나에도 무한한 관심과 애정을 표명했다. 죽음을 관조하듯이 성찰하면서 무아(無我)의 경지를 추구했다는 점에서 불교의 공(空) 사상과도 긴밀한 연관성이 발견된다. 쉼보르스카는 죽음의 공포를 생의 의지로 탈바꿈시키고, 생산적 담론으로 승화시킨 시인이었다. 죽음에 대해 자각을 거듭하면 할수록 인간은 현실에서의 삶의 모습을 되돌아보고, 성찰하게 되기 때문이다. 시인은 죽음을 노래하는 순간에도 아이러니컬하게도 사후 세계가 아니라 죽음 이전의 현실의 삶에 대해서 역설하였고, 살아있는 동안 주어진 순간마다 최선을 다해 치열하게 살아야 한다는 메시지를 우리에게 전달했다.

영문 초록

Death is an important motif in the poems of Wislawa Szymborska (1923~2012); they are discovered in the poems consistently. Szymborska did not regard death as disconnection from life. Instead, she reflected on the meaning of death in the middle of various aspects of life without pause. Since her debut, the poet humbly accepted the limitedness of existence. She refused dichotomous division between birth and extinction, but accepted death as a part of life indifferently and transcendentally. Szymborska emphasized existential value of the individual so that she gave particular interest in the ontological crisis of each individual, who was disregarded anonymously and forced to be sacrificed in the midst of the immense flow of history. She even did not fail to notice a dead ground beetle thrown away on the road. Thus, she showed infinite interest and love in each small living being around her. It is discovered that her poems are associated with thoughts of Void(空) in Buddhism because she reflected on death, pursuing the world of Non Self(無我): Annata. Szymborska changed fear of death to willingness for life and sublimated it into productive discourse. While singing death, ironically she emphasized life before death, not after death. Thus, she delivered such a message to us that we should live a life with our every best moment.
