국문 초록

체코인은 슬로바키아어에 대해 수용적 이중언어 구사자(receptive bilingual/passive speaker)이다. 체코인들은 이미 유년기부터 슬로바키아어에 노출되어 그 언어에 대해 유사모국어 수준의 언어이해력(mutual intelligibility) 은 소유하고 있지만, 어떤 언어심리학적 장애물로 인해 능동적 구사력이 제약을 받는 그래서 그 능력이 결여되어 있는 민족이다. 이것은, 두 언어가 계통학적 친족관계나 중세에서 근대를 거치면서 지속적으로 진행된 두 민족의 밀접한 교류와 언어접촉의 역사, 그리고 최종적으로는 20세기에 68년 동안 한 국가체제 안에서 공존했다는 역사적 사실을 고려한다면 이해하기 어려운 상황이다. 동일한 이중언어 상황의 조건 하에서 체코어에 대한 슬로바키아인의 언어구사력은 체코인보다 월등히 높은 것을 보면 슬로바키아인들은 보다 능동적인 이중언어 구사자인 셈이다. 본 연구는 체코인의 슬로바키아어에 대한 수용적 이중언어 사용과 연관된 근본적인 쟁점들을 고찰하고자 한다. 체코어와 슬로바키아어의 언어접촉의 역사를 통해 불균형적 이중언어 상황의 배경을 살펴보고 슬로바키아어에 대한 체코인의 태도와 그들의 사적 영역에서의 이중언어 상황에 대한 담화전략에 대해 논의한다. 마지막으로 최근 체코의 수용적 이중언어 상황에 나타난 변화를 살펴보고 공적 영역에서 진행되는 조직적 언어 관리에 대해 간략히 전망해 본다.

영문 초록

Czechs are the receptive bilinguals or passive speakers of Slovak language. Czechs are the nation who has had enough exposure to Slovak language from their childhood to have a native-like mutual intelligibility of it, but has no active command of it. Their inclination to a specific kind of receptive bilingualism may be approached from the point of pragmatic, psycholinguistic views. In the discourse between Slovaks and Czechs, however, receptive bilingualism was not expected to function equally for all speakers. While in practice Slovaks were expected to demonstrate a better command of Czech than vice versa. The reluctance of Czechs of all ages to speak Slovak reflects their perception that they can communicate more effectively, and in some cases more authoritatively, if they stick to their mother tongue. Thus, although two languages are genetically closely related languages which form the subgroup of West Slavonic languages and shared their long literary tradition since the Middle ages, and finally, during the 20th century they coexisted in one state for 68 years (1918-1938 and 1945 -1992), most of the time, there has been asymmetrical relationship between two languages. This study investigates the significant issues related to Czech-Slovak receptive bilingualism in the Czech territory. It provides the basic history of Czech-Slovak linguistic contacts and the background to their unequal status. I discuss the problem of Czechs' attitude toward Slovak language and discourse strategies in private domains. Finally I consider the problem and the prospect of organized language management in Czech Republic.
