여말선초 불교와 유교의 사생관과 조상의례

국문 초록

조상의례의 변화는 사회적 변화임과 동시에 사상적ㆍ종교적 변화를 반영하므로 여말선초 유교 중심적 사회로 이행되는 과도기적 과정을 보여준다. 조상의례의 방식이 불교식에서 유교식으로 변화하게 되었던 배경에는 사회의 사상적ㆍ종교적 기반이 불교에서 유교로 변하였기 때문이다. 사상으로서의 유학이 격변의 사회에서 뿌리내리기는 쉽지 않았기에, 신진사대부들은 종교적 실천으로서의 조상의례를 실행함으로써 가족윤리를 기반으로 한 유교를 보급하고자 하였을 것이다. 따라서 여말선초의 사상적ㆍ종교적 변화양상을 살피는 데 조상의례에 대한 연구는 중요하다. 본고는 여말선초 조상의례가 변화되는 데 자발적인 의지로서 실천에 옮긴 정몽주에 주목하여, 그의 선례를 통해 유교식 조상의례로의 전환을 의도한 정치ㆍ사회적 배경을 먼저 살핀다. 그리고 조상의례가 그 종교의 사생관을 반영하여 형성된 의례이므로 불교와 유교의 사생관에 대해 다룬 후, 조상의례의 변화에 쟁점이 되었던 '효'에 대해서 살핀다. 이를 통해서 본고는 포은이 ≪주자가례≫에 기초한 유교식 조상의례의 모범을 보임으로써 여말선초 조상의례의 변화에 어떻게 기여했는지, 그리고 당대의 조상의례가 종교현상뿐만 아니라 윤리적, 정치적 의도로 교체되었다는 점을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로, 특정 시기에 의례의 변화가 위로부터 아래로 시행될 때 과도기적 상황을 겪게 되는데, 이때 정몽주가 ≪주자가례≫에 의거해 여막을 짓고 3년상을 치룬 행위가 조상의례의 모범적 사례로서 소개되는 것을 의례화의 관점에서 이해해보려고 하였다.

영문 초록

As change of ancestral rituals reflects social, intellectual, and religious changes, the change of ancestral rituals in the late Goryeo and the early Joseon shows the process of transition into the confucianist society. It is because the intellectual and religious foundation of the society changed from Buddhism to Confucianism in those days that the ancestral rituals also changed from the Buddhist to Confucianist one. For it was not easy for confucianism as a thought to settle down in a rapidly changing society, the new high officials would have tried to disseminate Confucianism as a family ethics by putting into practice ancestral rituals as a religious practice. Thus, it is worthwhile studying the ancestral rituals for examining the aspects of intellectual and religious changes in the late Goryeo and the early Joseon. This paper, by virtue of focusing on Jeong Mong-ju who attempted to change ancestral rituals in the late Goryeo and the early Joseon, investigates the political and social background of the intention to change ancestral rituals into Confucianist one. Having looked into the Buddhist and Confucianist views on life and death which are reflected in ancestor rituals, the paper observes the notion of 'Hyo(孝)' which was an important issue in the change of ancestral rituals. On the basis of these understandings, this paper scrutinizes how Jeong Mong-ju has contributed to the change of ancestral rituals in the late Goryeo and the early Joseon by showing a model of Confucianist ancestral rituals based on Jujagarye(『朱子家禮』), and points out the aspect that ancestral rituals by then have been changed by ethical and political as well as religious intentions. Lastly, the paper takes a view point of ritualization in understanding that Jeong Mong-ju was introduced as an exemplary model who built a cottage and spent three years for mourning in time of transition when the change of ancestral rituals took place from the upper to the lower society.
