국문 초록

본고에서는 50년대 비평사에서 주목을 받지 못한 김양수의 50년대 비평들을 재검토함으로써 그의 비평이 지닌 의의를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 김양수는 순수문학(pure Literature)과 민족문학(National Literature)에 관한 논의를 통해 비평 정신 및 전후 한국문학의 정체성에 대해 치열하게 모색한 비평가였으나 논쟁 중심으로 정리된 50년대 비평사에서 큰 조명을 받지 못한 것이 사실이다. 50년대 그의 비평은 크게 미(美)의 추구와 민족문학론으로 나누어진다. 그는 초기 비평에서 예술의 지향점인 ‘미’의 문제에 집중함으로써, 전후의 불안과 인간 이성에 대한 회의(懷疑)를 극복하고자 한다. 초기 그의 미의 추구는 전후 황폐한 현실을 도피하기 위한 유미주의(aestheticism)의 경향을 보이고 있다. 그러나 그의 미의식은 건강한 ‘회의(懷疑) 정신’을 통해 한국 문학에 대한 반성과 성찰로 이어지게 된다. 그는 비평에서 미적인 창조정신과 비평정신이 조화를 이루어야 한다고 강조함으로써, 비평이라는 독립 장르의 성격에 대해 고민하고 있다. 또한 민족문학의 확립을 위해서도 회의정신을 통한 자율적인 주체 확립이 중요하다고 주장한다. 서구 문학 사조에 대한 무비판적 수용을 경계하고, 전통 역시 비판을 통해 재구성하려는 노력이 필요하다는 것이다. 즉 그는 ‘회의정신’이라는 비평정신을 통해 전후 한국문학의 정체성 확립 및 발전을 모색한 비평가라 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to find out a meaning embodied in Kim, Yang-soo’s criticism by reviewing the 1950s’criticisms by Kim, Yang-soo which didn’t attract attention in the 1950s. Kim, Yang-soo was a critic who intensively attempted to find out an identity of post-war Korean literature as well as a spirit of criticism through Pure Literature and National Literature. However, it is true that he didn’t receive huge spotlights in the history of criticism of the 1950s. His criticisms in the 1950s could be divided into pursuit of beauty and National Literature Theory. He attempted to overcome skepticism about post-war anxiety and human reason by focusing on the problem of ‘beauty’, an orientation of art in the initial criticism. His initial pursuit of beauty shows the tendency toward aestheticism for escaping post-war ruined reality. However, his sense of beauty led to self-reflection and introspection on Korean literature through sound ‘skepticism’. By emphasizing in his criticism that a spirit of aesthetic creation and a spirit of criticism must be harmonized, he deeply considered the characteristics of independent genre called as ‘criticism’. In addition, he asserted that it would be important to establish spontaneous identity through a spirit of skepticism for establishing national literature. That is, he suggested that there must be many efforts to look to uncritical acceptance of the trend of Western literature and to reorganize traditions through criticism. In other words, he is considered as a critic who sought to establish the identity and development of Korean literature through a spirit of criticism called as ‘skepticism’.
