『삼국유사』에 반영된 신라불교의 생명관

국문 초록

본고에서는 『삼국유사』에서 보이는 신라 불교의 생명관의 변화를 살펴보았다. 『자타카』에서 보이듯, 불교의 생명관에는 인과응보를 강조한 연기법에 따른 육도윤회사상이 깊이 투영되고 있다. 직간접적으로 『자타카』의 영향을 받은 『삼국유사』에서도 축생은 물론 인간 그리고 천신들은 등가의 생명의 가치를 가진다. 이러한 생명중시 및 수평적 생명관을 근거로 설화속에서 인간은 인과응보에 따라 축생, 천신으로 윤회전생하거나 귀신이 되어 원한을 갚기도 한다. 심지어는 자유롭게 축생과도 사통할 수 있었다. 기존에는 통일전쟁기를 맞이하여 등장하는 호국불교의 생명관에는 살생유택과 같은 변용을 불렀다는 의견이 제시된 바 있다. 그러나 불교는 한번도 그 어떠한 생명도 가벼이 여기지 않았으며, 원한을 남기지 않게 조심하도록 다양한 설화는 명복을 빌기 위해 사찰을 건립하는 불사 등 그 구체적인 방법까지 제시한다. 따라서 호국불교가 생명을 경시했다거나 살인을 허용했다는 견해는 재고를 요한다. 아무리 시대가 변하고 사회가 변했다고 해서 불교의 근본이념이나 사상이 변한 것이 아님을 『삼국유사』는 여실하게 보여주고 있다. 이와 같이, 『삼국유사』에 반영된 신라 불교의 생명관에 대한 본고의 접근은 『삼국유사』라는 사료가 어떠한 모습을 담고 있는지에 대한 사적해제에 일부분은 기여했을 것으로 본다.

영문 초록

This paper deals with the changes of Shilla Buddhist perspective on life shown in 『Samguk Yusa(三國遺事)』. As shown in 『Jataka』, in Buddhist perspective on life, retribution rebirth deities based on retributive justice[yeongibeop], which emphasized cause-and-effect is well reflected. In 『Samguk Yusa』, which directly or indirectly was affected by 『Jataka』, animals are also regarded as equivalent to human beings and deva. Based on these life-oriented and horizontal perspective on life, humans beings in myths tend to reborn as animals, or reincarnated, or transmigrate as a ghost to revenge. In some cases, even free interaction and communication with animals were possible. Traditionally, the National defense Buddhism, which took birth during the unification war, has transformed its perspective on life as to "Kill only with forethought." However, even during that period, Buddhism has never easily killed living things and tried not to leave any desire for revenge. To this end, many tales tell us many stories that temples were built for immortality. That is why if there are no specific document, it is arguable that the National defense Buddhism has look down on the lives or allowed killings should be changed. 『Samguk Yusa』 writes that cause-and-effect as well as birth and death are all transience of life. Also the book tells us that the path toward realizing liberation beyond samsara is the ultimate goal. Perspective on life is believed to be the basic value of religion. That is why the notion of lives cannot transform even though time changes. Since the society has changed, people can view lives differently, leading to perceptual changes about lives. However, 『Samguk Yusa』 shows that basic values or philosophy have not shifted. Likewise, Shilla Buddhist perspective on life was reflected in 『Samguk Yusa』 an this book may have contributed to the interpretation of historical records.
