영문 초록

As Artaud presented the issue of 'crime,' 'love,' 'war' or 'madness' in his "Theatre of cruelty', Sarah Kane's Blasted depicts them simultaneously, and provocatively. Fragmented images, such as blood, trembling, hatred, death and murder are a sort of sensation, that could not be replaced by anything else in Kane's plays. Her radical and experimental dramatic techniques are used to provide a new outlook on and values in the human condition. From this perspective, the play is not a simple "bloodspilling" after all. The hotel room in Leeds instantly has been transferred to a battlefield, which means violence, beyond the level of the individual, is extended to the entirety of humanity. In addition, the media conveys not truth but falsehood in order to maintain the symbolic order. Kate, however, has come back to Ian as a voluntary victim by blasting her own body. Her desperate reaction is to break the vicious circulation of violence that has run in an endless loop. In the end of the play, Ian's last word "thank you" can be heard vaguely in the rain. The sound of the rain may be called variations of cruelty, delivering both forgiveness and love.
