중기 구석기시대 석기공작에 대한 지역적 특성의 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 남한강 하류에서 발굴조사된 구석기유적을 중심으로 지형ㆍ지질적, 그리고 석기 양상을 바탕으로 이 지역 구석기공작의 특성을 파악하고자 진행하였다. 유적은 대부분 남한강가에 위치하고 있으며, 이 가운데 병산리, 백석리, 연양리 유적은 하안단구의 상부에 자리잡고 있다. 이 지역에서 하안단구는 두매가 확인되는데, 하상비고 10m 내외의 하위면단구 상부에 병산리 유적이 위치하며, 하상비고 25m 내외의 상위면 단구 상부에 백석리와 연양리 유적이 입지한다. 유물은 단구 퇴적물 상부에 위치하는 점토성 퇴적물 내에서 출토되는데, 하부 쐐기구조 아래의 적갈색조를 보이는 점토층에서 유물이 공통적으로 출토된다. 그 연대는 연양리 유적의 OSL연대측정 결과를 참조할 때, 65,000BC를 전후한 시점으로 판단된다. 한편 도곡리 유적의 경우에는 사면말단부에 해당하는 골짜기부에 위치하며, 유물은 사면에서 기원한 퇴적물과 섞여 재퇴적된 것이다. 이러한 양상은 MIS 3기와 관련된다. 그러므로 남한강 하류 유적의 유물층은 모두 중기 구석기시대에 속한다. 이 지역에서 발굴조사된 구석기 유물은 유적별로 수량의 차이가 크다. 하지만 비교적 단순한 다듬은 석기의 구성에서 찍개가 상당수를 점유하고 있다는 점은 주목할 만하며, 이러한 점은 해당 지역에서 나타나는 석기공작의 특성으로 판단된다. 특히 찍개 중에서도 외면찍개가 차지하는 비율이 대단히 높다. 이렇듯 특정 지역 내에서 찍개(외면)를 위주로 한 석기공작이 집중적으로 확인되는 점은 중기 구석기시대 타 지역권에서 보기 드문 것으로써 소위 석기공작의 지역성에 대한 하나의 논의를 이끌어낼 수 있는 자료라고 판단된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to identify topographical and geological characteristics of paleolithic sites excavated in the lower reach of Namhan River Basin and the characteristics of its stone industry. The sites were mostly located in the riversides of Namhan River, and the topography where the site were located was characteristic of being positioned on the upper part of the river terrace. There were two terraces in this area: Byungsan-ri site was located in the upper part of lower terrace with about 10-15m of relative height; Baegseogni and Yeonyang-ri sites were located in the upper part of upper terrace with about 25-30m of relative height. The artifacts were excavated within clay deposits located in the upper part of the terrace deposits, and they were commonly excavated from reddish brown clay layer under the lower soil-wedge. The dating was estimated to be around 65,000BC, when considered of the results of the Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating on the Yeonyang-ri site. As for the Dogok-ri site, Artifacts were found in the valley part located on the slope foot, being estimated to be re-deposited by mixing when the deposits from the slope filled the valley. The paleolithic artifacts excavated in the region remains very large difference in the number of artifacts from each site. It is remarkable that a considerable number of the sites were chopper-chopping tools, based on the analysis of stone tools, which were estimated to stone industry characteristic of the ones found in this area. Out of the tools, choppers were considerably higher in the rate.
