This paper examines how the concept of culture is understood and to which extent it is accepted and realized in German language education in Korea. The research is based on culture-related papers on German language education and the relevant curriculums as well as on various assessments of the reality of German language teaching at Korean schools and universities. Discussions about the concept of culture in the papers on German language education in Korea started to gain momentum in the mid-1990s. Culture and intercultural competence became a new field of research in German language education. Culture was no longer merely understood in terms of literature, arts etc., but defined in a broader sense as including all customs, practices etc. of human life as a whole. In this context, the methods of teaching culture and intercultural competence in foreign language education were developed and gained also attention as a possible means for overcoming the crisis of the German language and literature as an academic discipline in Korea. Furthermore, intercultural competence was propagated as an independent field of education in the era of internationalization and multiculturalism Several German programs for developing intercultural competence were introduced and their adaptability to Korean society evaluated. The relevant academic discussions are to some extent reflected in the current curricula of schools and universities. However, the academic discussions and curricula measures have not yet been fully reflected and implemented in the classrooms of schools and universities.
Dieser Aufsatz untersucht, wie der Begriff "Kultur" im Bereich Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF) in Korea verstanden und inwieweit er aufgenommen und in die Praxis umgesetzt wurde bzw. wird. Zu Grunde gelegt wurden dabei DaF-Abhandlungen über "Kultur" sowie die relevanten Curricula und die Analysen der realen Situation des Deutschuntenichts in Schulen und Universitäten. In den koreanischen DaF -Abhandlungen begannen die Diskussionen über "Kultur" Mitte der 90er Jahre. In der Folgezeit entwickelten sich "Kultur" und "Interkulturelle Kompetenz" als ein neues Forschungsfeld in koreanischen DaF-Kreisen. Dabei wurde "Kultur" nicht länger nur als Literatur, Kunst usw. verstanden, sondern in einem breiteren Sinne als alle Aspekte des menschlichen Lebens umfassende Verhaltensformen definiert. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden Methoden zur Vermittlung von Kultur und Interkultureller Kompetenz im DaF-Untenicht eingeführt, womit sich oft die Hoffnung verband, dadurch die Krise des Faches Germanistik in Korea zu überwinden. Darüber hinaus wurde Interkulturelle Kompetenz als eigenständiger Untenichtsinhalt im Zeitalter der Internationalisierung und Multikulturalität propagiert: Verschiedene, in Deutschland entwickelte Programme zur Förderung Interkultureller Kompetenz wurden vorgestellt und auf ihre Anwendbarkeit in Korea hin überprüft. Die wissenschaftlichen Diskussionen haben sich mittlerweile bis zu einem gewissen Grad in den aktuellen Cunicula niedergeschlagen. Aber in der Untenichtspraxis vor Ort besteht noch großer Handlungsbedarf in Bezug auf die praktische Umsetzung der Ergebnisse der wissenschaftlichen Diskussionen sowie der curricularen Bestimmungen.
