국문 초록

필자는 본 논문에서 Joel Osteen의 설교를 개혁신학과 성경적인 설교에 근거하여 분석하고 평가했다. 조엘 오스틴의 설교 이해를 위해 그의 가족적 배경을 먼저 연구하고 특히 아버지와 어머니가 그의 설교철학을 형성하는데 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 살폈다. 오스틴의 책은 그의 철학을 일관되게 소개하고 있다. 최근에 행한 설교에 근거하여 설교적 특징을 살폈다. 오스틴에 대한 평가는 미국에서는 극단적으로 표출된다. 인간에 내재된 자기개발을 통해 최대의 행복한 인생으로 인도하는 설교자, 긍정의 힘으로 삶에 활력을 심어주는 희망 전도자, 또는 심판의 하나님이 아니라 축복의 하나님을 드러낸 목회자로 인정하기도 한다. 한편 번영신학을 조장하는 자기 계발자, 그리스도의 복음을 파괴하는 자, 십자가 없는 기독교를 만드는 자로 비판하기도 한다. 그러나 설교를 구체적으로 분석하여 비판한 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 한국에서 오스틴의 설교에 대한 전문적인 연구는 필자가 아는 바로는 거의 전무하다. 오스틴에 대한 연구는 그의 설교를 이해할 뿐 아니라 바람직한 성경적 설교를 세우는데 도움을 제시하리라 믿는다. 오스틴의 설교연구는 전달부분과 내용부분으로 나누어 진행했으며 전달부분에서는 한 주제를 집중적으로 전달하는 뛰어난 스토리텔러라는 점과 청중을 사로잡는 전달력을 장점으로 제시했으며 내용면에서 성경 본문을 제대로 다루지 않는다는 점, 그리스도 없는 윤리를 설교한다는 점, 번영신학에 물든 복음을 제시한다는 점, 그리고 그의 설교가 주로 자아성취와 자아계발에 치중되어 있다는 점을 비판적으로 밝혔다.

영문 초록

The author analyzed Joel Osteen’s preaching based on reformed theology and biblical preaching in this article. In order to understand his preaching, the author researched Osteen’s family background, especially how his father and mother influenced him to formulate his preaching philosophy. Osteen’s book consistently introduces his philosophy. Based upon recently given sermons, the author examined the characteristics of Osteen’s preaching. In the United States, the evaluation of Osteen is divided at extremes. He is, by some, accepted as the evangelist who leads others to their most joyful life by bringing out the potential through self-development or a man who vitalizes people’s lives by putting hope in their lives through affirmations or a pastor who unveiled the God of blessings instead of the God of judgment. On the other hand, however, he is criticized as the self-developer who encourages prosperity Gospel or as the man who destroys the Gospel of Christ and creates a cross-less Christianity. Despite these radical evaluations, it is hard to find a research that critically analyzes his preaching. In South Korea, as far as the author is concerned, there has never been a comprehensive research done on Osteen’s preaching. The author believes that a critical study of Osteen’s preaching will not only help to understand his message but also will lead to establish a solid biblical preaching. The analysis of Osteen’s preaching was divided into two sections: the delivery and the content. The delivery section points out Osteen’s ability to capture the audience and his ability to be a great storyteller while focusing on a specific subject. The content section highlighted the fact that he does not cover the biblical text properly, he preaches Christ-less morality, and he presents a gospel that is tainted by prosperity and his message is majorly weighted on self-achievement and self-development.
