존 브로더스 (1827-1895)는 19세기 말 미국 설교자들에게 중요한 영향을 남긴 설교학자다. 그의 책‘설교 준비와 전달에 관한 연구’는 백 년 이상 교단을 초월해 미국내 주요 신학교에서 설교학 교과서로 사용되었다. 브로더스는 예일 대학의 권위있는 설교학 강좌인 라이먼 비처 렉처에 초대받아 탁월한 신약학자요, 최고의 설교자라는 찬사를 받았다. 그는 이미 1870년대에 해외에서 저명한 설교학자로 알려지기 시작했다. 브로더스의 책은 아직도 설교학의 고전으로 꼽히며, 여러 책들과 논문에 계속 인용되고 있다. 우리는 아직까지 지속되고 있는 브로더스의 영향력을 보면서, 과연 어떤 요소들이 그의 설교를 탁월한 것으로 만들었는지를 묻게 된다. 브로더스의 명 설교들은 다음과 같은 요소를 사용하는 그의 독특한 방법들에 의해 만들어졌다. 1) 성경 진리에 대한 강한 확신. 2) ‘설교정원’이라고 불렸던 설교준비 방법. 3)쉽고 명확한 언어 스타일. 4) 충실한 강해. 5) 청중과의 공감. 브로더스의 이러한 설교 방법들은 여러 기반 위에 만들어진 것이다. 그는 먼저 아리스토텔레스, 씨세로와 같은 고대 수사학자들과 18세기 수사학자인 훼틀리, 켐벨의 이론들을 바탕으로 설교의 배열과 논증법을 발전시켰다. 또한 비넷, 알렉산더, 쉐드와 같은 설교학자들의 다양한 이론을 수용 및 조합하여 자신만의 독특한 방법론을 만들었다. 브로더스의 이런 시도는 성경적 진리를 유지하면서, 동시에 새로운 설교학적 방법들을 사용하여 설교의 효과를 증대시키기 위한 노력이었다.

영문 초록

John Albert Broadus(1827-1895) profoundly influenced American preachers in the last half of the nineteenth century. His book A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons has been used as a homiletic textbook for more than a hundred years, regardless of denomination. Yale University invited Broadus to give the Lyman Beecher Lecture on Preaching and applauded him not just as an admirable preacher but also a distinguished New Testament scholar. In the early 1870s, he was already known abroad as a prominent homiletician. Throughout his books and sermons, one can recognize certain elements which ranked him as the most outstanding preacher. From the preparation of the sermons to their delivery, several factors—strong conviction of biblical truths, a process of sermon preparation called homiletical garden, clear language style, faithful exposition, sympathy with his audience—created unusual pulpit effectiveness. Broadus built his own homiletical methods on diverse foundations. Broadus adopted rhetorical tools from classical rhetoricains (Aristotle, Quintilian, and Cicero) and Enlightenment rhetoricians (Whately and Campbell). He applied his rhetorical insights to the arrangement and argument of his preaching. Numerous homileticians such as Vinet, Alexander, Shedd were another main influence of his homiletical idea on expository preaching and its practical tools. He put various theories, fused them in his homiletical melting pot, and cast his own preaching methods to proclaim God’s message. Thus, Broadus delivered biblical truths with new homiletical ways.
