칼빈의 구제 이해와 실천적 빈민 구호 방안

국문 초록

16세기 칼빈의 제네바는 변화의 소용돌이속에 있었다. 칼빈은 자신의 신앙의 갱신을 통해서 사회 문제를 완전히 새롭게 인식하게 됐다. 그가 신학적 문제를 사회적인 이슈들과 나란히 놓고 보게 한 것은 기독교 사회복지 사상의 전환점을 마련한 것이라 평가할 수 있다. 그에게는 종교와 세속 사회가 결코 두 영역으로 남지 않았던 것이다. 칼빈의 사회 복지 사상의 근저에는 이웃 사랑의 구체적 표출로써의 구제의 실천이 있고, 그 구제는 곧 참된 경건의 본질이라는 사상이 놓여 있다. 이런 큰 구도하에서 칼빈은 자선과 구제를 교회의 본질적인 사역이라는 사실과 이 구제 사역의 주역이 교회의 집사라는 사실을 강조한다. 이런 칼빈의 집사직의 규정은“집사직의 재발견”이라고 언급할 수 있을 정도로 오해된 집사직을 초대교회의 원래의 위치로 복원시킨 것이라 하겠다.. 더 나아가서 칼빈이 16세기 제네바의 대표적인 구제 기관인 구빈원과 구제 사역을 그 본질로 하는 집사직을 결합하여 운영한 점, 또한 피난민을 위한 효율적인 프랑스 기금 운영 등은 구제의 탁월한 실천적 방안이었다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 칼빈의 자선과 구제사역을 살펴보며 현대 교회가 강조하기 시작한 복지 목회의 신학적 근간을 정리해 본다.

영문 초록

Calvin made significant contributions to the dramatic reformations that characterized 16th century Geneva. Through his reforming work, Calvin perceived social problems in a new perspective that became critical in shaping the Christian social welfare system. Rather than separating religion from secular society, he married the two, understanding social issues to parallel theological issues. Calvin’s perspective of social welfare emphasized redistribution of wealth on the foundation of love. Calvin regarded charity as an essential church ministry. He ventured into a “rediscovery of the role of deacons,” restoring deaconship to be as described in the Bible. Calvin particularly focused his study on the appointment of the seven deacons in Acts 6 charged with caring for the widows and the distribution of the fellowships’ resources. He also pushed for conserving deaconship as a permanent position as described by 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Given that he showed considerable openness to deaconesses, this meant that women could have a permanent position in the church. Although this was quite liberal of him, he was still practical and realistic by limiting the role of deaconesses to the ministry of the poor and ill. This article compares the theological foundation of social welfare ministry with modern churches’ recent emphasis on social welfare ministry.
