본 논문의 목적은 바울의 교육적, 수사학적 배경과 바울 설교에 나타난 그의 수사학 사용과의 관계를 규명하고, 그것이 오늘날 설교자들에게 주는 함의는 무엇인지 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 로마 시민으로서, 유대인으로서, 그리고 기독교인으로서의 바울의 정체성을 통합적 관점에서 살펴 보아야 한다. 무엇보다 서신서들 자체가 바울이 당시 수사학 교육에 얼마나 정통해 있었는지를 증거한다. 바울이 그리스 로마 수사학을 사용했다는 주장에 대한 반대 논거는 바울 자신이 수사학적 방법론의 사용을 부인하고 있다는 점이다. 이와 관련하여 본 논문은 바울이 수사학 자체를 거부한 것이 아니라, 그 당시 사람들이 갖고 있었던 수사학에 대한 잘못된 인식과 기대들을 거부한 것으로 본다. 특별히‘사람의 지혜’와‘말의 힘’에 대한 고린도 교인들의 잘못된 인식을 교정하기 위해, 바울은 정교한 수사학적 방법론을 동원하고 있다. 이를 증명하기 위해‘바울의 자랑’이 등장하는 고린도전서 11-13장을 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 바울이 그 당시 유행하던 그리스 로마의 수사학적 기법을 아무런 여과 없이 사용한 것이 아니라, 복음 증거에 합당한 방법론으로 승화시켜 사용했음을 증명할 것이다. 마지막으로 바울의 수사학 사용이 오늘날 설교자들에게 주는 함의가 무엇인지 제시한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to discern the relationship between Paul’s rhetorical background and his use of rhetoric in his preaching, and to suggest some implications for contemporary preachers. In order to investigate this relationship, one first needs to explore the trinity of Paul’s identity, that is, his Roman citizenship, his Jewishness, and his Christianity. Paul cannot be grasped on the basis of any one of these factors. Regarding Paul’s educational background, Paul’s letters themselves betray such a command of the Greek language and his familiarity with the literary and rhetorical conventions of Greek education. Paul consciously worked with rhetorical theory, but specific problem precludes this conclusion, since Paul himself apparently seems to reject ‘powerful speech’ and rhetorical methodology in 1 Cor. 1-4. Regarding Paul’s disavowal of powerful speech, this study concludes with Pogoloff that Paul does not reject the idea of rhetoric itself and the use of it altogether. Instead, Paul rejects the glorification of rhetoric and its social implications. In fact, Paul implemented elaborate persuasion in order to reverse the Corinthians’ understanding of wisdom and embraced eloquent style as a proper means to accomplish this. One must keep in mind that while Paul obviously used rhetorical conventions in Greco-Roman culture, he did not slavishly go behind social conventions and practices at that time. Rather, Paul radically transformed the devices of rhetoric in antiquity for advancing the gospel. The most significant implication of this study derives from Paul’s fervent aspiration to win his audience to Christ. Paul’s primary purpose was not rhetoric itself; rather his real concern was the gospel and its effective and powerful expression. Paul was a successful communicator and preacher in the sense that he realized what he would and would not work with the people in the Greco-Roman world.
