피타고라스의 Tetractys에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 피타고라스의 초기 사상에 나타난 수 사상이 그리스의형이상학적 사유 발달에 있어 어떠한 영향을 끼치고 있는지를 그 개념사적 발달의 관점에서 살펴봄에 그 목적이 있다. 1 장은 피타고라스학파가 바라보는 자연 내지 우주가 인간과 아무런 상관이 없는 단순한 물리적 세계가 아니라, 소우주로서의 인간이 닮고자 하는 대우주로서의 상응 관계를 지닌 세계이고 더 나아가 질서와 조화가 지배하는 예지적 세계임을 밝히고 있다. 바로 이러한 이유에서, 피타고라스의 세계는 특별히 코스모스라 불리며, 인간은 그 속에서 질서와 조화를 읽어내기 위한 관조(theoria)의 노력을 기울이게 된다. 2 장은 이러한 우주에 대한 설명의 체계로서 나타난 형이상학적 일원론 및 다원론들이 어떻게 본래의 종교적 다원론과 일원론의 시각으로부터 발달되어 왔는지를 추적하고 있다. 3장은 그러한 형이상학적 일원론 내지 다원론의 시각에서 어떻게 수를 아르케로 보는 시선이 나오게 되었고, 그러한 시선이 질료인으로서의 수와 운동인으로서의 테트락튀스를 바탕으로 하여 예지적 세계를 설명할 수 있는 개념 체계를 형성하게 되었는지를 밝히고 있다. 이러한 고찰을 근거로 하여, 본 논문은 결론에서 피타고라스의 수 사상이 세계에 대한 설명 체계 일반을 대상에 대한 구체적이고 질적인 파악으로부터 추상적이고 양적인 인식 체계로 변환시키는 중간 과정의 작업으로서 철학사 내지는 개념사적인 관점에서 매 개념적 위치를 차지하고 있음을 밝히고 있다.

영문 초록

This study is purposed to clarify the effect how the pythagorean way of mathematical thinking in its first stage has produced on the development of Greek metaphysical thinking from the point of conceptual development. In the first chapter, we have explained that the pythagorean Physis or Universe is not the mere physical world that has nothing to do with the human-being, but the Macrocosmos that the human-being as a Microcosmos wants to imitate(mimesis) in his corresponding relation with it & the intelligible world where order & harmony work as a principle. On this account, the pythagorean world is named especially as a Cosmos & the human-being tries to decipher its order & harmony through theoria. In the second chapter, we have traced the procedure how the metaphysical monism or pluralism constructed as a explanatory system of this Cosmos has emerged from the religious pluralism & monism. In the third chapter, we have brought into relief the process how the attitude of regarding the number as Arche is originated from the metaphysical monism or pluralism & the method by which such an attitude has succeeded in forming the conceptual scheme capable of explaining the intelligible world by the number as a material cause & Tetractys as a efficient cause. As a result, we have concluded that the metaphysical meaning of the pythagorean mathematical philosophy is lied in constructing the median conceptual tools for transforming the concrete & qualitative apprehension of the world into the abstract & quantitative comprehension.
