중국 선종에서의 ‘信’의 의미와 역할

국문 초록

모든 종교는 信을 기본으로 하지만 다른 종교와 달리 불교는 붓다와 인간이 같다는 믿음에서 시작한다. 달마선은 같은 진성이라는 확신과 수행이 부가되어 깨달음을 목표로 한다. 달마는 ‘동일한 진성’, 마조는 ‘自心이 부처’라는 본각을 나타낸다. 마조에게 있어서 信은 달마와 관계를 직접 연결하여 선종의 정통성을 확립하는 역할을 한다. 또 선종에서 달마나 마조보다 비교적 등한시하였던 信이 마조에게 이르러 다시 부각된다. 물론 기본 바탕에 信이 전제로 하기 때문에 당연시했을 가능성이 높다. 따라서 마조는 信에 대한 역할과 의의를 재조명하였다. 그런데 마조 이후 信의 역할은 줄고 점차 『신심병』으로 대체하는 경향이 마조계를 중심으로 나타난다. 더 나아가 『신심명』의 활용은 선종을 넘어서 불교계 전반에 나타난다. 이것은 마조 이후 조사선과 어록이라는 독특한 선종의 특징과 관련있다. 따라서 마조를 중심으로 하여 전통적인 信의 활용과 역할, 그러고 새로운 시대에 걸맞는 『신심명』의 활용이라는 현상이 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 이것은 마조가 어록과 조사선의 淵源이 될 수 있었던 기틀이다. 결국 마조라는 인물은 중국 선종사에 있어서 불교 전통과 현실이라는 사이에서 적극적으로 인간 중심으로 선사상을 실현하여 발전시키는 중추적 역할을 담당했다.

영문 초록

All religions regard faith(信) as the fundamental aspect of religions. However, Buddhism starts with the faith that Buddha and human beings are originally the same in nature. Bodhidharma believes that the both have the same true nature. In addition, practice is required to achieve the goal, enlightenment. For Bodhidharma(菩提達摩), ‘the same true nature’ represents the original enlightenment. On the other hand, for Mazu(馬祖), ‘one’s mind is the very Buddha’ means the original enlightenment. Mazu established the legitimacy of the Sean School by directly connecting the relationship with Bodhidharma in terms of “faith”. This “faith” neglected since Bodhidharma was newly emphasized by Mazu in the perspective of definition and role. Therefore, Mazu shed a new light on “faith” and re-established the role and definition of it. However, after Mazu, the new trend of replacing “faith” with Xinxin ming(信心銘) was made by the Mazu lineage. Furthermore, the practical use of Xinxin ming appeared not only in the Seon School but in the Buddhism as a whole. This has something to do with the special characteristics of the Seon School in terms of patriarchal Seon(祖師禪) and discourse records(語錄) since Mazu. Accordingly, the traditional application of faith and the new trend of the Xinxin ming application appeared distinctively around Mazu period. This is the foundation on which Mazu can be the origin of the patriarchal Seon and discourse records. Eventually, in the Chinese Seon history, Mazu played a key role in the realization of human-centered Seon thought between the traditional Buddhist tradition and the reality of his period.
