초기 여성영웅소설의 서사적 기반과 정착 과정

국문 초록

이 글은 여성영웅소설이 모색되던 17세기 말부터 나름의 장르관습이 완성되던 18세기 말까지를 초기 여성영웅소설시대로 규정하고, 이 기간에 창작된 여성영웅소설의 서사적 기반과 정착 과정을 탐구한 것이다. 초기 여성영웅소설은 ‘우월한 여성 대 열등한 남성’이라는 여성 우위의 구도를 기반으로 영웅담과 결연담이 결합된 모습을 보인다. 이에 따라 본고에서는 초기 여성영웅소설의 서사적 기반을 남장 여성의 영웅담, 한 남성 대 두 여성의 결연담, 여성 우위의 구도로 파악하고 이들의 생성 및 결합 양상을 검토하였다. 남장 여성의 영웅담은 17세기 말에 〈설저전〉에서 모색되고 18세기 초에 〈이현경전〉에서 완성되었다. 그 후 〈이현경전〉의 영웅담은 〈김희경전〉ㆍ〈홍계월전〉ㆍ〈하진양문록〉ㆍ〈부장양문록〉 등에 지속적으로 수용됨으로써 여성영웅소설의 장르관습 확립에 크게 기여했다. 결연 담은 18세기 중반 이후 〈부장양문록〉ㆍ〈김희경전〉에서 온전한 모습을 갖추게 된다. 두 작품은 공히 ‘한 남성 대 두 여성’의 결연담을 핵심서사로 삼고 있는데, 이는 중국과 조선의 재자가인소설에 대한 풍부한 독서경험이 작용된 것으로 추정된다. 여성 우위의 구도는 〈설저전〉을 제외한 초기 여성영웅소설의 공통 기반이 되었다. 다만 〈부장양문록〉ㆍ〈김희경전〉이 ‘한 남성 대 두 여성’의 결연담을 핵심으로 삼아 일부다처의 화락한 공존을 모색한 반면, 〈이현경전〉ㆍ〈홍계월전〉은 남녀의 극단적 대립을 그려내면서 여성의 새로운 정체성을 모색했다는 점에서 분명한 차이를 보인다. 초기 여성영웅소설은 17세기 말에서 18세기 말에 이르는 기간 동안 모색, 형성, 정착되었다. 〈설저전〉은 여성영웅소설의 서사모형을 실험한 모색기의 작품이고, 〈이현경전〉ㆍ〈하진양문록〉ㆍ〈부장양문록〉은 〈설저전〉을 계승하여 단편과 장편의 여성영웅소설을 태동시킨 형성기의 작품이며, 〈김희경전〉ㆍ〈홍계월전〉은 각기 장편 및 단편 여성영웅 소설의 장르관습을 확립한 정착기의 작품이다. 초기 여성영웅소설이 정착되는 데는 남성영웅소설의 서사구조와 군담이 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 과정을 통해 군담의 주체가 남성에서 여성으로 바뀌자 원래 지배이념을 수호하는 데 이바지하던 ‘국가서사’가 가부장적 모순에 대한 여성의 각성과 반발을 드러내는 ‘여성서사’로 성격이 바뀌었다.

영문 초록

Early heroine novels show the aspects of combination of epic tales and love stories based on the female-dominant structure of ‘a superior woman to an inferior man’. Thereupon, this article understood the narrative ground of early heroine novels as the epic tales of a woman disguised as a man, love story of one man to two women, and the female-dominant structure and examined the aspects of their generation and combination. The epic tales of a woman disguised as a man was groped for in 〈Seoljeojeon〉 at the end of the 17th century and then was firmly established in 〈Yihyeongyeongjeon〉 at the early 18th century. After that, the epic tales of 〈Yihyeongyeongjeon〉 were constantly accepted in 〈Gimhuigyeongjeon〉ㆍ〈Honggyewoljeon〉ㆍ〈Hajinyangmunrok〉ㆍ〈Bujangyangmunrok〉, etc. to contribute greatly to establishing the genre convention of heroine novels. Love stories came to have their integrity in 〈Bujangyangmunrok〉ㆍ〈Gimhuigyeongjeon〉 after the mid-18th century. The two works depict the nuclear narrative of love stories of ‘one man to two women’ in deed. The female-dominant structure became the common ground of early heroine novels except for 〈Seljeojeon〉. Early heroine novels were groped for, formed, and settled from the end of the 17th century till the end of the 18th century. 〈Seoljeojeon〉 is the work in the period of groping to experiment the narrative models of heroine novels. 〈Yihyeongyeongjeon〉ㆍ〈Hajinyangmunrok〉ㆍ〈Bujangyangmunrok〉 are the works in the period of formation, and they succeeded to 〈Seoljeojeon〉 and quickened the birth of either short or full-length heroine novels. 〈Gimhuigyeongjeon〉ㆍ〈Honggyewoljeon〉 are the works in the period of settlement to establish the genre convention of either short or full-length heroine novels. In the settlement of early heroine novels, there was a great influence of the narrative structures and war stories of hero novels.
