국문 초록

5월행사는 1980년 5•18을 기억하기 위해 매년 5월 광주에서 열리는 일련의 집합적 실천행위이다. 이 논문은 그동안 5월행사의 성격, 내용 구성, 운영 방식 등의 변화를 고찰했다. 이를 통해 ‘5•18의 문화화’ 명제를 재정립해 보고자 했다. 5•18이 국가의 관리 자원으로 전환되는 제도화 과정은 5월행사를 정치적 축제성보다는 다양한 볼거리를 담은 스펙터클의 전시장으로 변화시켰다. 여기에는 민주주의의 진전이라는 정치적 환경변화뿐만 아니라, 5월행사 주체들의 당사자주의와 지역주의라는 이념적 제약이 작용했다. 5월행사의 특징을 보면, 몇몇 제한된 단체들이 반복적으로 참여하고, 매년 동일 유형의 문화행사들이 그 단체들에게 배분됨으로써 형식, 내용, 운영 면에서 변하지 않는 스테레오타입이 재생산되고 있었다. 이 과정에서 정치적 의미의 행사나 삶과 직결된 문화적 실천은 의도적으로 배제될 수밖에 없다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 최근 5월행사는 아시아문화중심도시 광주조성사업의 규정 아래 존재하고 있지만, 이 사업의 이념적 자원인 5•18의 의미를 5월행사에 적극적으로 반영하려는 노력은 전혀 시도되지 않고 있었다. 광주에서 문화는 아직 삶을 재편하는 정치적 기획이라는 의미로 인식되지 못하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 ‘5•18의 문화화’는 민주주의를 확장하고 삶을 풍요롭게 지속하기 위한 정치적 실천 전략으로 재인식되어야 한다. 이를 위해 5월행사는 5•18, 삶, 집단, 개인이 복합적으로 얽힌 문화적 실천의 장이 되어야 하고, 이를 지탱하고 실천하기 위해서는 연대와 공동체성의 의미를 재확인해야 한다.

영문 초록

The Event for The May is a series of collective and practical activities, which is held in Gwang-ju every year to commemorate May 18, 1980. This paper shows how the Event for The May has been changed in terms of its concepts, contents, and operating systems in the meantime. Also we try to redefine the subject of ‘the culturalization of May 18’. While the May 18 was converted into the event managed by government, Event for The May has become an exhibition with a variety of spectacles, rather than a political festival. Of course, the political conditions has evolved into development of democracy. On the other hand, there were ideologic limits, such as localism and the priority of people concerned. As a result, some limited organizations repeatedly participated in the event, and similar cultural events were distributed to the organizations. It led to the situation that a stereotype was reproduced in terms of forms, contents, operators, and so on. In the course of it, we can notice the political events or the cultural practices related to the real life had to be excluded on purpose. Recently, the Event for The May has been contained in the idea of Asian Culture Hub City Gwangju Project, but there were few positive attempts to show the real meaning of May 18 in it, which is the major idea of this project. Actually, in Gwang-ju, it’s hard to accept culture in itself as a meaning of political project influencing life. So ‘the culturalization of May 18’ should be recognized as a political strategy to put into practice, which means expanding democracy and enjoying a rich life. In addition, the Event for The May has to be a cultural place, where several elements like May 18, life, groups, individuals are combined, and we need to reconfirm the meanings of solidarity and community spirit.
